gearbox whine no 3rd 4th or 5th

gearbox whine no 3rd 4th or 5th
on my way home from work ive lost all gears above 2nd. slot it into gear and its like its in neutral.
1st and second have a loud wiring noise. reverse sounds fine.
there was a slight noise that developed a mile before it happened then i lost the higher gears pulled over tried to pull away and was greeted by the whine.
is it likely to be the linkage or will the box be dead?
im really hoping its not the box as im going away on friday
