Default Smell of burning when running

Hi.

I have a smell of burning when running my focus st170, I have checked under the hood & cant see anything which would cause this, the engine block is very hot.

Any ideas would be welcome.

I had that in my mk2 mondeo, shortly followed by a coolant smell, shortly folllowed by my heater matrix failling.
