Mk2 Escort restoration/build
This my mk2 build/restoration, its a 1979 1600 sport.
When i got her she ran and had been mot'ed and taxed the year before but had been off the road for a year so the previous owner could work on her.
And this is how she was when i got her.

i don't really have a set direction with this, there are things i need to do like some welding underneath and properly paint her, and there are things i wanna do like strengthen the strut tops and put the gussets in, and im sure there are many more bits i will find as i go along. however i don't mind if it takes me a long time i know i could just patch the welding underneath and get her through an mot and put her on the road but i want to build her properly from the ground up. this is my first real project i have undertaken myself, i have worked on quite a few restorations at work over the summers. (I am a second year Motorsport Engineering student)
Unfortunately at this point in time my uni house doesn't have a garage
but when i take it home for summer and next year, it will. so at the moment is double cover with tarp and a massive plastic sheet.

So having got the car to uni first port of call was to strip the interior out.

This was all fairly easy and didn't show up any nasty surprises the floor seamed all rather solid, the main gripes were nasty work done my the previous owner that would need redoing or neatening.
And then the resent shit weather came along and put a hold to everything, in the short periods where it wasn't raining in bristol a few small things were done, there were mainly taking the rubber front splitter, bumper, grill and the front wings off.

again this didn't show up any nasty surprises, the wing having been replaced before were fine and would just need sanding back and repainting, the inner wings were spot on from what can bee seen, the only niggling thing that i would like to replace if i can just for cosmetic purposes mostly are the front panel because the lower sections have rotted away a little and the inner wing channels because they have been bend all out of shape and look pretty messy.
And that's how it was left for a another week of stupidly cold and wet weather. until today when the sun decided to come out again for a while and the temperature went above 3 degrees. so this afternoon the headlights, front indicators, rear bumper, strut brace rear lights, boot spoiler and rear loom were all removed, and then work began removing all the old primer from the inside of the car, to put a new layer of etch primer on. ready for hopefully the car to be repainted late in the summer.

already i am starting to run out of space to put stuff in the house.
but that's all for now, i will keep updating every time i get something done.

yeah its not bad at all.
got some more done on it today, took the dash clocks out and the steering surround, and then carried on with the floor pan and did the rear drivers side.

hopefully will carry on with the front foot wells tomorrow and get them done. but i will keep you all posted.

Managed to get the passenger foot well done yesterday, and started the floor under the rear seat this afternoon. until it started snowing slightly so i had to cover her back up but hoepfully should get more of that done as soon as it clears up again.

had some more time on the rear section this evening and found my first hole YAY!!!
luckily its not bad from what i can tell. but i had to stop work again because it got dark and i knocked over the lamp i was using and broke the bulb

Okay so its nearly been a year since i updated this.
not a huge amount of work has been done and unfortunately a bad thing happened while i got my parents to trailer the car home from uni. the car shifted and collided with the jockey wheel. and yes it was strapped down but obviously not well enough.

all though this looks bad it wasn't a great set back as i wanted to replace the front panel and slam panel anyway as some probing had shown that rot had set it round the bottom of the front panel and the front of the wings was made of many nasty bits. And this all just meant my dad had to pay for the panels and not me.
so ignoring this for now i then set about finishing the interior floor. i had yet to patch the small hole as i was waiting for my birthday to get a welder. so carried on around it.

i then moved round to the bulk head and front of the car, the heater bowl turned up a fair bit of rot which i was expecting and a new one of these was promptly ordered. Along with a repair panel for around the base.

next up was removing the front suspension, engine and gearbox aswell as the steering column, rack and some other bits like the brake servo.

When i removed all this stuff i saw the worst rot so far at the start of the tunnel and the bottom of the bulkhead.

I gave the engine and gearbox a wash to see how they would come up and with a little work and paint they will both look great.

At some point i also picked up a fiber glass bonnet really cheap thanks to the guys at the Ultra Home Rally Team. although im not sure if i will actually use this.

having had a summer of not much time between work and other commitments to get as much as i wanted done the car returned to uni relatively unchanged from this.
This is where work on the car got really lax as 4 of us from uni started up a race team and spent up until Christmas building a Mk2 Golf GTI for the MSV Mk2 Golf GTI Championship.
We started with this.

and finished with this.

and if anyone is interested they can check out for more pictures and our build blog; http://dreamtec-racing.co.uk/
After the Christmas holidays work began again. with starting to rip the front off. I will let the pictures do the talking here as its pretty obvious.

as you can see a lot needs doing, but as everyone knows it god has not let us to have a dry day in about a month so she has been safely rapped up to try and keep her dry.
hopefully once the weather lets up a bit progress on this should move on a bit faster especially with the evenings getting lighter as well.
