Default Ford escort front seat removal ????

Ok here is a prob I hope someone can help me with;; I have a ford escort 55 van 2001, I have turned it into a small camper I have now took out the front seat as I never carry anyone with me and I want the front floor space for storage. After taking out the seat I found the air bag light now flases four times then again four times and keep on doing this. Has any one got any ideal of what I need to do. If it is the wires under the seat can I just join them up to fool the light. Any help well appriciated. Cheers all. Pete

Yep it'll be those wires fella, should be no reason why connecting them won't solve the issue mate but just to prove it put a multimeter across the seat's wires that you took out, make a note of the resistance and if necessary get a resistor for about 2p to connect between the two incoming wires.
If the resistance is below 1ohm then just link out the cables.

Yes thanks for that, I this morning put the seat back in while the batery was off and conected back up the light is now out. I am however now a bit worried about shorting the wires out so might go for what the other chap has said. I will drop him a note now. Thaks, Pete

Hi, since I posted this help request, I have infact reconected and light is out
I did look at the seat and the pirotecnicks for the tentioner looks like I can infact just unbolt it and like you say; place it wraped up and conected away safe under the floor at the back.
I know that from April this year I believe you have to have the belt light and air bag lights all working, and sycleing as they should. taking the bolb out will not do????.
I am hoping to do as you sujest and as above, i will just have to put stuff back on seat and put seat back in for the MOT. Am I Right.... can be this easy to solve my prob of wanting seat out. I do genuinly never carry anyone when i am traveling around country, just me and my dogs Hang gliding sand dunes any where we can and parking up rought. Pete

Just remember it has a small explosive charge in it to pretension the the seat belt (pull it tight) in the event of a crash! This means the the belt locks before you move very far so are less likely to get whiplash etc.

I would not advise leaving it tucked away - having tested them on a concrete garage floor I can tell you you would not want it to whip round and hit you!

I would advise going to the resistor route!

When it comes to electrics I have not got any idea so I think I will stick it out of harms way. The floor in the back of the van has small arm suports at the front so I think I will stick it under there and I believe if it dose goes off it will only pull the belt arm into itself so if it is wrapped up in lots of canvas it should be safei
I hate having the air bag in front of me as I saw the film of the original testing of them and if you are to close they will take your head of your shoulders. Still I am told the chances of one going off by accident is very very rear indeed same for seat belts, so tucked away safe should be good, also easy to put back right for next mot> I have just missed all the new reg's for this year as I moted van last week... Cheers Pete
