Default My XR4x4 Twin Turbo project - New wheels!

My new project:

Well I have a new project for myself - a 1990 Sierra XR4x4

It is a little gem and will be restored to better than new all being well.

It has a genuine 35000 miles and plenty of original paperwork.

I haven't even had chance to wash it yet so it is as it came from the previous owner.

Plans are sort some niggles on it - aircon belt needs replacing, indicator stalk needs replacing, few other odds and sods but nothing major. The paint is swirlmarked and it does have dents where things have fallen on it while it was garaged for around 20 years. I do plan on a full respray as want it perfect.

The car has no rust from what I can see and has the original dealer matts, plates, stickers.

Anyway here are the pics I managed to quicly take;

08/03/2013

Got my new genuine mats through from Ford;

Also sorted new bulbs as the standard ones are horrendousand was near blind driving about last night;

If anyone is looking for trim removal tools I highlyrecommend these Bo-Jo kits;

Spent a bit time cleaning the engine bay and making a listof bits I want sorted;

18/03/2013

Well just got back from a business trip to Germany and had plenty of deliveries while I was away so been busy today.

Parts that have arrived;

- new aircon belt
- new brake discs
- new brake pads
- spare complete inlet plenum
- ambers

Big thanks to YOREVOL off Passionford for sorting me out the genuine Ford ambers!

Started by getting the aircon belt on and then the ambers.

Started on the brakes but the snow put a stop to that so only 1 side has been
done.

Ignore the rusty rocker covers as some tasty ones are sorted

Still havent had a chance to clean and polish it but all
being well that will be tomorrow

Parts still to sort;

- headlight wiper
- sunroof seal
- stainless exhaust
- panel filter

Will keep this updated as it progresses.....

Nice to see one that has not been slammed with stupid camber angles and stretched tyres on banded steels

Keep the pics coming

Cheers for the comments - no silly wheels and massive lowering going to happen with this XR. At the most -30mm springs but nothing bigger than 15" alloys.

19-03-2013

Got the brakes sorted today:

Discs were shot and the original items - had alot of visible pad marks where the car had been stood for years:

Calipers all cleaned and new brakes all fitted:

Think the 23 year old brake fluid was past its best:

First proper clean:

Took the mudflaps off here if anyone has noticed them missing - cleaning out all the rubbish which had accumulated behind them and am going to clean and paint brackets tomorrow before refitting them.

Picking up some nice new parts in the next fortnight so expect more updates then

Already bought a set of RS1600i wheels haha - bought them last week but not picking them up will next week. Great minds think alike

20-03-2013

Well today and went and picked up my RS accessory frontskirt - couldnt find an original for sale and am lucky enough to only live 15miles away from Ian Herring who makes replica splitters from an original item.Top bloke and top item - fitted it straight away in between the snow showers:

I fitted it using self tappers and was a superb fit, leftthe cling film on to protect it as best I could whilst fitting.

All fitted and plates off so can get them cleaned and picstaken ready to be remade as originals are cracked on the front:

Original plate back on:

Would highly recommend this splitter

So today I had a very successful road trip picking up items ready for me starting to do more work on the XR.

Here are the bits I have managed to collect so for. Big thanks to twin-turbo, Ryz and Yoreval off here for some of the bits:

Koni adjustable dampers with cosworth lowering springs

S1 RS Turbo 15" alloys

Spare headlight motors and arms with Koni adjuster

Genuine RS accessory sideskirts

Sunroof - this should be ideal to rob the bits I want off it

Magnex stainless steel backbox

Front propshaft with good U/J's

Just waiting for some days off work now to get these bits fitted and actually drive the car

Got the stainless steel backbox fitted and it tidies up the car nicely - next to no extra noise. Will need to get a stainless mid section made to replace the original mild steel system as its fairly corroded.

Trying to get an hour here and there on the car after my shifts at work

Wont be getting to much done to it as its to good to destroy with to many mods - only the 15" alloys and accessory sideskirts before a full respray bodywork wise.

Cheers for the comments!

Yeah I fittedthe aero wipers - they work brilliantly with non of the screen being missed.Big thanks for the links and info - much appreciated!

Todays job was to put the alloys on- tyres are all good as well which was a bonus.

I know it needs lowering but alreadygot the suspension here but thinking of having them refurbed and repainted beforefitting them on.

Sits a little better anyway thanksto a slightly lower offset:

Well back from a nice 500 mile round trip with the Sierra and it ran perfectly - no issues what so ever.

Had 3 days around Sheffield and Derbyshire for Lisa's Birthday and broke out the XR.

Had some good cars to park next to at the hotel:

Yesterday had a ride to Abrahams heights and then a cracking drive around the area:

Get another set of 7 spokes soon so can make a perfect set and get them refurbed.

Cheers for the comments - the sideskirts don't look like they are going on now - cant bring myself to drill the sills to mount them as they are mint and after holding them up onto the car I prefer it without them.

Got standard rear lights but prefer the smoked ones at present.

Been getting quotes on a full respray as well - rust is no issue but the car does have a lot of surface scratches and some small dents on the bonnet and boot. These are the results of 20/21 years in storage.

Trying to get sorted for Heaves Hall show but will be WIP this season haha
