Having a car blasted at home
Hi all,
has anyone ever had a sandblaster come out to you and sand blasted your car at home? If so how expensive is it in comparison to taking it to be blasted, and does it upset the neighbours?
Tempted to do this to my shell when It's fully welded

we blasted the bottom of our trackday xr4i in the shed, just made a tent from cloth and foil to prevent most of the dust, but it gave an awfull mess! better to load your car on a trailer and bring it back, if you do it outside your next door fellows wont be amused, youll find red paint chips and media from blasting litterally everywhere, and your probs need to vacuum outside to get rid of all the crap!
Oh right! Sounds like I will have to transport it and get it blasted somewhere else then. I have a gazebo that fits over the car. Would that not do the job? Cheers for the replies!
I blasted the underside of a mini in the garage, basically put a skirt around the car and went under with a pair of painters overalls and a mask. The media got everywhere and took a lot of cleaning up, but as I was doing it myself it didn't coat anything so wasn't that bothered about the mess. Wouldn't want to do it on the drive or in a garage connected to house though.
i use a blasting cabinet every day fella and end up with glass bead in my boots [thats from a sealed cabinet lol]god knows how much mess u would end up with blasting at your house
I have the same, i used a lot of different media for blasting, like grit, glass beads, walnut and plain sand, also in a closed cabin, but after a few minutes you got a crunchy feeling in your mouth... Also, the plus for taking away the car is they can coat the bare metal very easy, way better than you can do with a rattle can or a spraygun...
Dunno mate, call the blaster to know, whe did ours on the ramp, but a friend of mine had his chevy pickup blasted, and they just lifted it on a forklift, luckily it came out way better than expected, had lots and lots of filler on the wheel arches and the bumpers and such, but they where all dents filled up with something crappy, fenders and such all filler, but almost no rustholes, but hey,it was an arizona car, so always have been in the desert i recon
Just call around for prices,it might look like a lot of money, but you cant do it as proper as they can, i blasted my front and rear suspention and driveshaft and such, and i can do it again, becouse the primer wasnt the good one, and thats not the way to roll. Maybe a rotary brush will remove the surface rust and i can coat it again, but its a shame for all the hours i spent on it, and those are just "small" parts, dont want that on your car mate!

Ah cool. I'm not sure weather to do everything I have done again, and do it all to the best standard possible, or just do it to an OK standard. Oh god I hate projects at times. I reckon the sandblasting route will be best though
Cheers!
Cheers!
On Ricks Restorations on sky, they had to blast a fairgorund ride that was huge, so had to be done outdoors.
They got a company in to blast it using dry ice as a media. Little frozen lumps of co2 were used, it was blasted and the only residue left was the material that was removed from the metalwork, as the blast media just evaporated.
Cant imagine such a company is as easy to locate and pay in the UK though !
