my father in law has a 06 mondeo 2.0 tdci with a pathetic 28k on the clock so to me lack of use is his 1st problem!
he drove to our house yesterday which is roughly a mile, mid journey he lost power and had clouds of black smoke, kept the car running, pulled on our drive and it died and now won't start, turn it over, fires then cuts straight back out with a puff of grey/white smoke.
i plugged in to it last night and got the following codes:
p0404 EGR circuit range or performance
p2288 injector control pressure too high
now i'd have taken a stab at it being EGR related purely from it's symptoms but don't want to incur the wrath of satan if i end up being wrong after fitting a new one so does anyone have any further ideas as to what it might be or should i just go with gut feeling and fit a new EGR valve and hope the p2288 code just goes away?

check the boost hose that runs down the front left hand side of the engine bay behind the off side headlight..
they have a tendancy to split and cause alot of smoke and lack of power when they do..
start with the cheap stuff first.
