Default Turbo diesel help needed - PLEEEEEEASE!!!

Can anyone tell me if an escort intercooled turbo diesel engine will run without the injection advance connected on the pump?

What I mean to say is... I know it will run but will it run well? Are there enough options of adjustment e.g max fuel, boost compensator and advance/retard timing to iron out any issues that may occur e.g knock?

Really need help on this one, I've trawled every post on every forum I can find, I've rang a diesel specialist I know and still no answer.

Any information or options you may have may help. Even if you know where there's an early pump for sale (apparently easier to find rocking horse $+!T)

i had the 1.8 td in the p100 non intercooler , imo i would be careful as the timing has to be spot on with these to run well , they can adjust on the injector pump pulley maybe help you a little i dont know tbh i would change it with all the same bits or just leave it as it could give you lots of trouble

Yes on the top of the pump with 3 wires and looks like it can twist on sliders. Mine is black but in this image it is red. Is this definitely what you've got disconnected? If so have you had to adjust fuel/timing or do you have any starting problems, power losses at certain rpm/load?

Yes thats the one. Ye mine is disconected was like it when i bought my van it is a mk4 1.8d converted to a td. I dont have any starting problems pump is timed correctly etc but my max fuel has been turned up a bit but by disconecting that i wouldnt say that you would get diesel knock etc. my cold start isnt conected either and it still starts up fine. Hope this helps

Thanks very much for the info.

Just to clarify, you have yours disconnected and the pump turned up - you said if I disconnect it you think I will get knock. Do you mean if I don't turn the pump up? Do you get any knock?

Brilliant thanks very much for that you've put my mind well at ease now! I assume your engine is running completely mechanically now then with no ecu?

I'm putting the '99 intercooled engine into a '98 van but want to keep the same wiring loom, gearbox and subframe (from the van so literally just swap engines) so being able to run the engine without the ecu is my main concern.

I haven't disconnected it yet. Just changed the belts and I'm messing about with the fueling to get the power up before I disconnect. Then I'll know I'm not too far away with it. Wish me luck!
