A friend of mine has just bought a nice 07 plate transit from eBay. It has a 2009 140 bhp TD lump, ECU and 6 speed box conversion.

It was sold due to the engine being knackered. According to the seller it has no compression on no 4. The engine is believed to have only done 40000 miles

What sort of thing might cause this and what will be the easiest way to get it running?

Is a new lump cheaper / less hassle than getting this one rebuilt?

I build those puma engines everyday, I'd say it's easy to rebuilt but I guess I'm biased. Ford don't make it easy to get hold of engine components either. You got any way of pressurising the cylinder to see where the compression is going? Eg whip an injector out, wedge an airline in there tight ( at tdc obviously so it don't turn over) listen for escape into te inlet, exhaust or oil filler cap?

That'll tell you whether it's bottom end or valve train

 

To add: they are known to scuff pistons, it's that's the case the engine is toast

 

Has it snapped the crank?

 

Could be injector overfueling causing the damage,, I sells few due to few engines due to this and bending rods ect but you can hear that

 

my brother in laws cracked a piston, had the motor rebuilt easy enough

 

seen many injectors putting holes in piston on that engine

My friend got the van home today, so not sure what the actual score with the motor is yet.

From reading the above, seems injectors might be an issue.

Will report back as soon as I get a chance to speak to him to see what he finds.
