Default Bald tires better on the front or back?

Hello,

So ive got abit of a bald tire that goes flat a lot and i know i should replace it but for now is it better on the front or back?

Front wheel drive car and i was think it would be better on the back as it does not have to do half the work but on conners would it let me slide about?

Please dont go on about changing it as i know thats what i need but the ££ wont let me even get a worn tire...

Cheers.

Dont use your car then as its illegal............

Stop using it, save the petrol money up and buy a new tyre.............. Otherwise sell it as you cant afford to run a car....

The next post could be..."Slid off the road today into a mother pushing a pram and killed the pauir of them......."

Have you not got a spare you could fit even if it's just a space saver?

I would have to agree. If they're illegal, they are illegal. It's actually for your own benefit, no one really wants 3 points and a fine, or worse harming someone or yourself!

Space saver, why they dont give full ones ill never know.

How far can i go with that on? I dont think ill have any cash till the end of the month and i will need to use the car at some point just not as a everyday. Maybe till the end of the month 100 miles isn, but should be less.

I understand it's more a speed limitation. 60mph? It might say on the wall of the tyre. I'd say they're "only to get you home or to a tyre fitter", I'm not sure on that.

2nd hand tyres are not ideal but they only cost £15 and would keep you legal

As others have said, ultimately, either don'f use the car for now, or put the spare/space saver on....

however, in answer to the original question, the tyres withthe least tread on should be on the front & the tyres with the most tread on should be on the rears.

whenever I have bought 2 new tyres for my car, the tyre fitters have always put the new tyres on the rears & rotated the rear tyres to the front.

if you hit standing water or are driving in wet weather, the tyres with the least grip will lose grip first.
so;

If the balder tyres are on the front, then the car will understeer.
If the balder tyres are on the rear, then the car will oversteer.

now we all love a bit of oversteer, preferably on a track, but on ordinary roads, with other road users to consider, then its far, far easier to control understeer.

handy vid to demonstrate:

Nothing pisses me off more than going out to cars which have completely bald tyres on them. If you can't afford the tyres, the car shouldn't be on the road full stop.

The amount of cars I've refused to get going again because of this is unreal.

And be thankful that you've got any kind of spare wheel. A lot of cars now don't even have a space saver, just a bottle of gunk and a wanky little compressor.

I am suprised I would put the worse tyre on the rear as 80% of breaking is done at the front! And I need to stop if a kid runs out in front of me!

if you cant afford a part worn tyre i'd seriously consider public transport as you cant afford to run a car without endangering other people

Dont think anyone cares about the make, a legal nang kang ditchfinder is better than a bald tyre. Beggars cant be chosers.

£25 for part worn

V

£60 fine + Cost of new tyre + 3 points + increased insurance premium + possible Accident

If your gonna drive an illegal vehicle the last thing you would do is advertise the fact on a forum with nearly 100k members!

Space savers are designed just to get you home or to the nearest tyre fitters in an emergency. Someone I know was busted for using one for a while, he was pulled over by a copper who saw the car for a number of days driving with the space saver on, he was told to get the car off the road and sorted immediately. A couple of days later said copper saw him again and busted him for an unsafe vehicle
