I've always fitted springs so the writing on them is the right way up, although to be honest I don't think it matters a great deal.

Close coils at the top so the lower ones act first and as you reach/create more compression the upper tight coils react last/least.

No difference at all
How would the spring know if the wheel was moving upwards or the body of the car was dipping down

tight coils compress easier than ones with bigger gaps and should always be fitted with the tight coils to the top!

so if only one corner hits a bump then the full car pushes down on that one spring?
i'd say tight to the top?

Of course it makes no difference which way up they are fitted, they will compress exactly the same, it is just simple physics. But as said, I've always fitted them so the writing on them faces the right way up.

When I fitted my Eibachs, stuck them on writing faceing up and the tighter coils were at the bottom...
