Default Is it a clutch cable on it's way out?

Hi Peeps
I have a 58 plate focus estate, (74000 miles, 6 speed box) 2 ltr diesel, some times I have to select two or three forward gears before I can select reverse especially if it is very cold. Do you think the clutch cable or auto adjuster might be on it's way out ?
Thanks and Happy Christmas to you all
