Default Fuel Gauge

Since i bought my puma about a month ago the petrol gauge has not worked. It still on full all the time while the ignition is on and drops to empty when i turn it off so the needle moves and is working. I have changed the sender and is it is still doing it so i am stumped as to what it could be.

you have changed the biggest and most awkward part so it must be a gremlin on the cluster Ian

Ian this is a common thing on fiestas/puma especially the mk5, Check continuity from the sender to the gauge with a multi-meter. Also check resistances and check your earths are ok but you will prob needs a haynes manual to ref

Ok i am really confused now!!!!

There has been no change with the gauge. I noticed the other day that i had a fuse missing from the fuse box in the engine bay. After checking it is for the EEC module. I fit one and no change to the car in any way. I did this Thursday night.

So Friday evening after driving the car to and from work i jump in to pick my some up, start it up and while i got myself sorted a heared a loud thud, like something had been dropped on the roof. I jump out look fround the car but cant seee anything so think nothing of it.

As i am driving the gauge slowly starts falling and stops at half a tank and stays there for a little while then very slowly creeps up to three quarters!!

After a 30 mile trip i leave it stood for about an hour before the journy home. Start it up and sit on half a tank again. I put £20 worth of petrol in it but the needle does not move. So now it reads half a tank but does move very slightly over half a tank but then back down.

I am so confused now.

must be a problem with the instrument cluster itself, have you had it out and had a look round it?

Check the reference wire has not shorted to ground, if it were the cluster you would almost certainly have more issues!

Not had the gauges out as the gauge does move when you do the gauge test and when turning the ignition on and off.

What or where is the reference wire?

On older cars, the resistance the sender has determines what the gauge will show, in other words it's the wire that connects to the sender, you will have more than one I suspect for fuel light etc, I suspect the wire is the problem!
