When the temperature is around 1-5 degrees my 2008 520d pauses after pressing the start button; the glow plug symbol on the dash come then the engine starts; but a few mornings last week when it was -3 dergrees it started instantly with no glow plug sign!!
How does that work? is there a heater?

It could be like my old Seat Cordoba Diesel, the glow plugs were turned on when you opened the driver's door. If it wasn't very cold, the glow plug light didn't even come on when you turned on the ignition.
Mine (535d 06 plate) also does that. Sounds a bit lumpy too when it fires but then is ok. Have only seen glow plug light on dash once and that was when it was about 2 degrees outside. Minus 1 and no glow plug light.
Am as confused as you are lol
