Default My mate big spec saph popped on the dyno :(

He spent around 40k on it and had only done alittle over 900 miles before mapping and it hit 500+bhp and a big end failed

So you can quess he's gutted, he's on about breaking it, I'm trying to get him to keep it ( or sell it too me lol) but he says he can't afford to do it again and says he will stick a thread up over the next couple of days,

I really feel for him, it's such a shame because it's an awesome spec and had so much attention to detail and you could eat your dinner off the engine bay

This definitely isn't a for sale ad

Was it on an engine dyno or rolling road?

So what caused it? Was it a error in building it?

If it was me I would be looking at clearances oil system mods if any and quality of rods used as I have seen the eagle stuff and its junk.
My engines get run in for 150 miles then full power.

Rod bolt snapped guys

So bottom end is junk now, block gone

Mark can you reuse the 10 studs and water pump conversion on another block?, I'm really thinking of buying the tall block and turbo set up

Did he use a stretch gauge or just tq them and what was the setting. We're they custom age 625 bolts or arp 2000.

He was getting it mapped by a good guy

He's a mechanic and thought he could do it, it's a arp bolt that's snapped, I think that could happen to anyone

Mark- I will ask him and let you know

Untill I strip it I can't be sure what went first. So lets not assume anything at this stage.
I've spent 5 years building it and many times thought about breaking it but now it's broken it's got to be stripped.
Shell will never be for sale but everything else will be in due course.
Thanks

Gutted for Martin, he should put the car to one side, get Christmas out of the way then set about getting another short motor built, maybe using standard crank/rods with pocketed pistons. Drop the power to the 450 mark and enjoy the car for a while

Gutted... I could build a YB but I would never do it as one little thing missed destroys the engine... So I'd always go to a builder.

When you say snapped is the rod poking out if the block. How has it been diagnosed.

A snapped arp rod bolt laying on the floor with oil everywhere?

I was thinking I want his tall block to use his studs and water pump ect along with the head and get a complete 200 block bottom end and refresh and balance it and pocket the pistons and get it modded to except the studs ect from the old one...

Bit like Matt said is what I was thinking yesterday hence asking if they can be reused

Small hole in block where sump bolts. The lip of the block is cracked off about 3 inches x 2 inches long it was on the bed of the dyno with an ARP2000 head of a bolt.
As the hole was turbo side it's hard to see and being 4x4 it's covered by the diff.
I can't confirm what went first. I can't blame rod failure or bolt failure at this time untill the engines out sumps off and cranks removed.
All I know is the all the vitals were fine, oil temp, prwssure ect.
It made a few good runs. No rattling no noises
Then ramping up on another run bang. About 4500rpm

The bits can be reused but I don't bother with 10 studs unless its got the MOUNTUNE style open deck liners.

What was the max rpm you were using.
Where the rods new or used.

Strange to just snap a bolt, I have seen it before, when the engine was stripped the other bolt was in the sump with no damage, that must have been the case of one bolt not torqued properly, hence getting loose and falling out the the cap being held on by one bolt that snapped

It's a hobby/toy so if you can afford it then why not?

Look at it another way. You've obviously paid a fair amount for the ST in your sig and you'll lose a good chunk of that.

Yep 20k+ ST that in 5 years is worth 5k

It's all about what you want to drive, yes he spend 40k but he can easily get 14/15k back even keeping the shell like he wants and getting nothing for the bottom end, if that had not of gone that was a good few grands worth

And the shell is worth a bit due to it's lovely condition
