I have never understood how people can be so ignorant! How can a great big build up of water over your grille and headlights even look like a good idea!??

So plenty of road users haven't a clue where their air intake might be exactly, but surely they know it is under the bonnet, and dare i suggest they might say 'near the top of the engine' if they were pressed to hazard a guess!?

In my humble opinion, navigating flood water is fecking simple (providing no one comes the other way in a 4x4/tractor and ruins your plan) - if the standing water is no higher than your sills or hubs, just drive slowly and don't splash your electrics, or build up a bow wave so large the water is pushed through your grille and into your engine bay/and over your air intake!

Just have to laugh at the guy in the t5 transporter (0.36 onward) - even at the end of the video the muppet is too impatient to wait for the truck to pass!
If you haven't guessed its flooded down this way (SW) and morons are blocking roads by needlessly conking out in front of everyone!

The desire to f'about in the landy was too great, so i went for a little drive in the floods...

 

Probably cos some people are just dumbass idiots who've never been taught, or learnt properly on how to do it.
And people who don't know that particular stretch or area of road, and as such can't even begin to guess or estimate how deep it's going to be when they get into it.

As for people just driving too fast in heavy rain, standing water etc, they're just f'king idiots, making it a more hazardous journey for the safer more knowledgable drivers amongst us

i've driven through loads of flood water and i was always taught to keep revs up and a small bow wave in front of vehicle, yes make sure u know where air intake is, but i use to drive a small renault extra van (renault 5 van) and i had that through water over the front lip of the bonnet, i had moved the air intake pipe to above the strut, would shock people watching when i would come through floods with my headlights under water

 

I always drive through slowly, The force of hitting water had enough will take panels off!

 

just dont go through floods in a ford, due to all the rusty holes in the floor. but at least the water will drain out.
i drive a escort, and stay away from floods, due to wanting to keep my feet dry

In my car? Like fuck would I want all that shitty water all over the place, the Mondeo would stay at home and the fiesta would more than likely float away

 

I'd do what the person did in the red corsa, no way would I get through that in my decked civic even if I could I wouldn't try, some people just don't use their brain and will do anything to get through the water

lol, its really bad where i am, and i've been driving a mk2 mondeo petrol and a old mk1 ka. i've had no problems going through in the middle of the road as slow as possible/1st gear in water about 8inches deep. had a woman stop me in her freelander last night saying not to go any further as it was over her bonnet, it was literally 8 inches if that!!!! i know a guy who has fucked his engine on his hdi 306 today, air filter was soaking!!!!!

There's a stream in our village that soon turns into a river when it rains. Its an old bit of street level bridge that it goes under so it has sagged quite a bit making the bit of road that floods even deeper. However, its only a few meters so people see it as a big puddle an hit it at 30mph.

Walking the dog in the week there was 4 broken down cars bumper to bumper on the side of the road. Surely a normal person would see the water, and the steamy broken down car the other side an maybe slow down?!

 

I remember when I first met the missus I gave her a pug 306 td to knock about in.
It was a cracking car and had just had a new (2nd hand) motor put in it when she decided it was a good idea to drive through a series of massive puddles at high speed in port talbot !!!
I'm driving behind frantically phoning her to tell her not to do it but of course she's ignoring me.
By pure luck she must have hit them so fast that it washed all the water out of the way and thankfully not through the airbox.
Her excuse was that her old man always did it in his mk1 escort which wouldn't have suffered much more than water in the points etc rather than a derv which would be terminal.
To be fair that was 11 years ago and she hasn't done it since and is even careful in the 4x4.

Many years ago my uncle drove through a flood and got water in the airfilter and bent a con rod, you cant compress water

 

Well it is has got as bad as it has ever been around this way, but with no, or very little rain forecast for the next week (just cold weather) the floods should start to reside - slowly!

The main run to the nearest town is under 8ft of water, and i walked (with waders) the alternative route and it was between 3 and 4ft deep. The levels here have risen beyond anyone's expectations - it really is mind boggling.

Will the sea one day reclaim this area of low land!?

Hydrolock is a cool thing to see, not so cool for your engine though.

 

The flood wasn't as deep as the air intake which is on the wing on a defender behind and above the NS front wheel, so little chance of hydrolock before you even consider ours has a snorkel... (even if there is a leak near the air box!)

There was a nice new audi a6 avant stood in flood water up passed it sills just down the road, but you wait until you see the flood...


The Audi had been removed before the fillm, but, for obvious reasons, it only made it about 20m into the flood before it died. At the time the water was still between 4ft and 6ft in the the middle. It beggers belief!
