Info needed on Porsche boxter and 911
Boxster. Had 2. Both 986 models.
A 2.5 and a 3.2S. For 10k you'll get a good car, not sure exactly what as i'm not as clued up on the prices as I was but an early 2.7 987 isn't far off 3.2S 986 power and is a much nicer car in terms of looks and interior.
They all drive superb, and I mean REALLY well, different league to anything Ford i've been in. They sound superb as well. There'll be loads of hairdresser etc comments to follow i'm sure but drive one and make your own mind up. Buy on condition and history, they do lots of miles very easily.
Early 3.4 996's. as said above, avoid. If you want a 996 get a 3.6 but you'll struggle for 10k.

I've only ever owned a 986 boxter S and thought it was ok, nice power and great handling, I just found it a little claustrophobic inside with the roof up. Mine had an engine rebuild before buying it 5k tag :S!!
The 3.4 does, ots the balance shaft seal and system, there is a mod for it but its 3k in parts to replace which is a lot even on a 10k motor as with labour your looking at around 4Kish
The one we did got hot on the right hand bank i think and nipped up. Revised liners and casing, + new pistons etc. + machining work for extra oil and waterways = a big bill! Was done by a company called hartech.
Never had to do that for 3.6 and boxster I think window reg was a common faul but not done Porsche stuff for almost 5 years now I think
Oh I remember doing alternators and radiators for 996 turbo alot
Don't worry about the IMS. its not as common as its made out to be. I've been doing lots of research into the 987 Boxster and the 996 911 as i'm looking at buying in the new year.
From what i have been reading on the Porsche forums only around 5-10% have had experience with IMS failure. Its not a big cost though to have it swapped for an up-graded item. An american company do a kit for about $800.
Have an independent inspection done by a specialist prior to buying. this will highlight and potential problems.
I'm looking at either getting a 2000-2001ish 996 convertible or 2005-06 Boxster. I want to drive both first.
Insurance is cheap also. The Boxster for me and the wife is only £550 FC. thats £30 less than we are paying to insure the Wifes 05 Mini Cooper lol. The 911 is only £650 FC.
Cheack out Boxa.net and 911uk.com These were recommended to me on here and are great for info and seem friendly.
