1990 mk4 escort bonus turbo w/cossie alloys - £1000
1990 Ford Escort Bonus 1.1
MOT: Feb 2013
Tax: Feb 2013
Mileage: 95k (approx.)
Previous owners: 6
Purchased in March 2012 completely stripped out. Spent months rebuilding it to how it is now. The engine came out of a G reg RS Turbo owned by a mate of mine. The mileage on the engine when it came out of the RS Turbo was 90k. I have been using it as a daily driver, and it hasn’t skipped a beat over the 5k miles its covered since the transplant.
I would be happy to keep the car and finish it off, but in my area there has been a lot of thefts of old fords in the last couple of months. I thought mine was safe, but last week, someone drilled out the drivers door lock trying to get in. Now I can’t be bothered with the aggro of having to put the steering wheel lock on it and worry about whether it will still be there in the morning. So I’d rather get rid of it to someone who either lives in a nicer area or has somewhere safe to keep it like a garage. I’ve been brutally honest with every detail I can think of with the car, and although it sounds like a lot, they are all just small, niggly bits and pieces. There’s nothing major wrong with it, I commute in it and drive it on a daily basis. Just needs a bit of TLC and attention to finish it off. Im going to have a session on the car with my mate whos an expert with escorts in the next few days, so a lot of the issues ive listed may have been resolved.
I’m looking for a quick sale, as I have my eye on a mk6 fiesta. I think the £1k asking price is fair, as I know the cossie alloys can be sold for £400+, so effectively you’re getting a working turbo’d bonus for £600.
It is still registered as a 1.1, so the buyer would have to sort this out. I was running the car as a sleeper, It looks just like a bonus from the outside, with cosworth alloys.
- Engine set up by power engineering in 2007, running roughly 180bhp @ 10psi. Can be adjusted on the bleed valve.
- No service history, but has been owned by 2 old ford enthusiast friends who regularly serviced and took care of it. Last service was carried out in July.
- Bodywork is in fair condition, as you can see from the photos, there is filler on various parts of the bodywork, which has not been painted, but it is grey in colour, so doesn’t notice too much against the silver paintwork. OSF wing has been hit at some point, and has formed a tiny spot of rust which you can see coming through. If it was a major problem, a new wing could be purchased for around £40.
- Other than the spot of rust on the OSF wing damage, it is completely rust free.
- Small dent in the passenger door. Can’t really be noticed.
- Escort cosworth alloys which I purchased in August for £450. They have been sprayed in a very subtle blue/silver colour, but have various light kerb marks around the rims, so could do with a refurb. Tyres are toyo proxes, but rear 2 could do with replacing as the tread is quite low.
- The car is fairly loud due to the decatted stainless steel scorpion exhaust. This also makes the car rattle quite a lot at certain resonance levels. Another contributing factor to the rattling is due to some of the interior cards missing a couple of clips, so not sitting completely flush. This would be easily remedied.
- It has no stereo or speakers as I haven’t gotten round to fitting them yet.
- Passenger seat has collapsed a bit, and tends to wind itself down. This could do with replacing, but nothing major.
- Has a full rs turbo interior.
- 80 spec clocks, which are reading just over 41k. The handbrake light stays on constant. I’ve been told this could be to do with either the handbrake sensor, or the brake reservoir sensor needs cleaning. I haven’t gotten round to sorting it as it doesn’t affect the car in any way. The fuel indicator has a habit of never rising above half full. Im not sure if this is to do with fact it has a 90 spec loom and needs 90 spec clocks.
- Has the wiring and switch for electric mirrors, but I haven’t gotten round to fitting them, can throw them in with the sale.
- The fuel filler neck leaks slightly when filling with fuel, nothing major. Could do with fixing at some point.
- Electric windows and remote central locking fitted on the drivers side, haven’t gotten round to fitting the passenger side.
- Has a toad ai606 alarm and immobilizer, but the alarm siren does not sound. I bought a replacement siren to try and fix it, but it didn’t work. Not sure how to fix this.
- Engine starts on the turn of the key with a little gas on the pedal every time.
- Someone tried drilling out the drivers door lock, so this would need replacing. Only has 1 key and key fob, this only fits the ignition barrel, does not open the passenger door or boot lock. Could benefit from a new lock set.
- I installed a front heated screen, unfortunately only part of it seems to work, just various stripes and lines all the way along seem to heat up. This could be remedied with a hammer and a windscreen insurance claim.
- Clutch and LSD gearbox replaced by a friend and myself in July as the gearbox was knackered when I bought it. Pulls well through all gears.
- I believe the steering may need an adjustment, as the steering wheel sits ever so slightly to the left. Tracking and everything else is fine.
- Running gear was all taken off the RS turbo the engine came out of, as it got scrapped for being so rusty. So the brakes etc. are all present on this car.
- It has been lowered on the front and back and has uprated shocks on the front. It is quite low, as I find it will scrape speed bumps if you aren’t careful.
- Fitted a cosworth fan switch, so the fan kicks in a bit sooner, this meant that throughout the time I’ve owned it, the temperature gauge has never gone past half way.
- No rear seat belts have been fitted yet, apart from the centre belt.
- The clutch ratchet has a habit of popping and cracking occasionally. This is a £5 part, but is a pain in the a*se job, so haven’t done it yet.
- The light cluster seems to have developed a personality. The full beam lights do not switch on for around 10 minutes after starting, and the dipped beams for about 20 minutes. This is probably just something stupid which I’ll fix before selling. So for the first 20 minutes of driving, you only have sidelights. Which is handy in the winter.
- NSF lower ball joint needs replacing as its knocking slightly, and OSR trailing arm bush needs replacing too as its also knocking. Very inexpensive to do.
BASED IN THE CROYDON, SURREY AREA.
I'm sure I've forgotten loads of stuff and will take some pics of interior soon.
Thanks for looking.

*UPDATE*
took some pics of the interior today. Also remembered 2 more things to bear in mind with the car:
- no rear view mirror, I just never got round to sorting one out. you might have noticed from the earlier pictures there isn't one.
- the plastic collar behind the steering wheel was missing when I bought the car, I didn't have another one, so my mate cut down one from a mk3 escort and put that on it. Subsequently this means that the indicators aren't self cancelling and the horn doesn't work.

The passenger door card is missing in this photo, as I had the intention of sorting out the electric window and central locking, but never got round to it. I'll put the door card back on tomorrow.
