Hello mate my missus has a T plate E46 318i

Few probs
1st no number plate lights
2nd sometimes when I try to start it it just clicks and the head lights come on full wierd eh I can bump it and it will start but the indicators on the dash don't work but do outside. If I turn it off and restart it they work fine
3rd sometimes when we switch it off and pull the key out the oil light stays on the dash and the heaters keep blowing

The battery is fine as is the connections the starter is good as well so any ideas I was thinking the body control module

 

Number one: Common issue with the rear cluster for the number plate lights, we have this issue with our E46 330i Sport. Try a new bulb, try cleaning the terminals, failing that, take it apart and check the wiring on the back, check the wiring where the cables go from the car to the boot, if all else fails, buy a known working rear cluster (around Ł40 on ebay)

Number 2: Clicking is a sign of the battery being flat and not enough grunt to turn the starter... Could be a couple things in my eyes, starter is on its last legs, battery is flat or old and passed its best.... or another thing to try, give the terminals another turn on the battery... Had a simular issue before and this worked, was not tight enough and causing all kinds of electrical issues.

Number 3: Oil light staying on is telling you the oil is low, worry if it comes on when your driving... They have been known to throw a sensor and cause the lights to come on, replacement from BMW is not massive money, check your levels first though to make sure that is not the case.

Check earths, electrical issues can be caused by poor earth straps... Failing that, get it on the diagnostic machines... I know a good BMW specialist in Yeovil if your in shit

 

The bulbs are new and the cluster is fine too there is no broken wires to it either

The battery is fully charged when this happens and the starter is fine

The oil light shouldn't come on when the keys have been removed that's why all this is confusing

I think the lights might be the LMU

And the rest might be the body control module but I don't know for sure

I was hoping some 1 would know lol

 

I hate cars lol her last Beemer fucked up and turned out she need a new ECU she fixed it then eventually sold it and bought this 1 now this 1 is playing up

 

lol if none of what I have said is causing it then I would be looking in the same direction you are. Something is not happy with it. Could save alot of time by getting it on a diagnostics machine though mate

It's defo electrical and all must be linked

 

Not sure if this applies but the e39 sometimes have ignition switch problems which share the same symptoms. On the e39 its a quick fix, not sure about yours though. Maybe worth googling 'ignition switch problems for 'your model'.
