Hi All, I am just about to complete purchasing an OE Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 heat shield which has sadly started to deteriorate at the section which sits above the exhaust. Is it possible to repair the damaged areas? I would really like to know what the shield is made out of...fibre glass, resin?? so that I can use material this to cover the affected areas, sand down and then repaint the whole shield....I will then use a reflective material to give the shield a better shot at survival! Is anybody able to shed any light or has had experience of doing the same? Thanks very much in advance

 

Wasn't there someone on Ebay selling replica ones made from new material just recently?

 

I could only find a non-OE type ( Item 181016445771 on Ebay ) but I'm sure I saw someone doing new ones that looked like the original material

 

The replicas one made recently are for Escort Cosworths.

 

Thanks for the replys but the heat shield is the black one that sits over the top of the turbo, trouble is the end which sits near the exhaust has a tendancy to melt which is what has happened. I can't decide whether or not to cut out the rot, protect whats left of the underside or use a heat resistant resin and rebuild the damaged sections with new fibre glass...I'm just worried that if I do this the fibre glass might melt?!? -any body had any experience of doing this type of refurb?

 

Try Harris on here i know recently he had one made up to look original but was 2wd /3door

 

Mine was 100% perfect as new UNTIL i put it in the have the exhaust changed and the fitter let go of it and let it rest on the front pipe whilst hot and it burned a hole in it

I can only blame myself though as I fitted it lol

 

I've researched this a bit further and found that the type of resin which binds the fibre glass is what dictates the temp it can withstand once set. Think I'm going to see if there is a suitable off the shelf resin that can cope with exhaust/turbo heat...failing that then its going to have to be the case of chop out the rot and make do with what is essentially a 20 year old shield but as original as they come! Thanks for the help!

 

Right, after many weeks of faffing about looking into this it doesn't look like anywhere sells the resin I would need. Sadly the heat shield I bought was worse than I imagined (crack down the middle section) therefore its going on the bay as somebody might make use of it but I now need to find a heat shield elsewhere, trouble is they're soooo expensive...anybody know of anybody who can supply something thats up to the task but won't cost £200+?
