Default focus mk1 1.6 zetec oil in expansion tank

Sorry to bother you guys, got a bit of a problem.

my mrs has a focus mk1 1.6 zetec on an X plate. the car has been in family since new and is on 107k.

last week i noticed oil in the expansion tank. there is no mayo under the oil cap and the car hasnt overheated.

do these cars have an oil cooler/intercooler that could be leaking? or has the headgasket failed? strange that the mayo is only in the water and not the oil.

if anyone has any info i would appreciate it, had a scout on google but there really isnt the same amount of info out there as there is for my golfs!lol!

thanks

I'd rule headgasket out, well, drain the oil and check for swirls of yellow. If it looks pretty clean I wouldnt worry about headgasket. You would most definatly see water in the oil, as well as oil in the header tank. Not too sure about watercooled oil coolers, Ive seen it on golfs where the header tank is pretty much full of oil because of this.

cheers for the reply!

any ideas where else it could be mixing?

oil still clear on the dipstick and cap!

planning an oil + coolant change, adding a stop leak additive then nursing the car til it dies.

I don't think these have an oil cooler? Certainly don't remember my old mk1 1.6 having one.

Has you topped up the coolant at all? Did you use the right stuff? If you use different types then they can react and sludge up the cooling system. As you say, I'd suggest draining the coolant and oil and refilling with new then keep an eye on it.

why can it not be head gasket? you dont have to have oil in water to be H G , and you dont always have to over heat. some times they just go?
does the car smell inside? do the windows steam up and hard to clear?

Sorry ric I'm not sure where the oil cooler is mate. Thinking about it I'm not 100% sure a focus has one.
