If we are on about hurricane Charlie in 1987 then I was camping on the north yorkshire moors!!
Was in the scouts and spent a torrid night taking turns holding the side of the tent down as the wind had ripped out the massive tent pegs ( about 1.5foot long!) from the ground on one side!
Packed up at first light and got picked up !!
*edit*
Just checked hurricane Charlie was in august 1986

Does Stick in my mind!
We were in an old farm house on top of an exposed hill, roof ripped off, chimney down, out buildings levelled.
It was actually really scarey, I was woken by chimney almost coming through my ceiling. Remember sitting in the kitchen and the house being ripped apart around us. Tiles were coming off the roof all the time and firing into the ground. We wanted to get out as thought the roof and chimneys were gonna kill us but you'd have been killed by flying debris.
My parents have Got photos of next day, tiles stuck in the garden like ninja stars. We had a plastic fish pond in the front garden and the stuff hitting hit managed to lift one edge and the wind pulled it out the ground.
Both my dads garages lay in rubble. These were big old converted barns with all his work stuff in. Hay barn roof gone, trees down.
Was scarey stuff.
I remember going into town and realising how easy built up areas got off.

I slept right through it all ! Never heard a thing, including the hundred year old oak in the park opposite snapping and going through the neighbours roof !
I remember it well, i was 17
Got woke up in the middle of the night and had a look out the window, as i was looking out the end gable got blown out and fell into the street. If it would of blown in it would of landed on my bed.
Mums nova got crushed when the side gable fell out (we lived in a big old house) and my dads 3dr cossie was very lucky and just had some wheel damage from the rubble from the gable.
Sea shelters at the bottom of the road completlly blown away, you wouldn't of even knew they was there.
