I've owned almost 4 years, it's a fantastic car and I'd certainly have another one in the future, anyone on here will already know all about these, sensible every day car (with potential to gain more bhp if you want to) economical as well as being reasonably quick when you put your foot down.
It is a nice bright red (not orangey as the photos look)
Don't let the mileage put you off, the previous owner (I'm the second) was a company car so it was motorway miles, and regularly serviced.
Our new diesel vRS Estate isn't as good at towing as we hoped, so selling my vRS for a tow car (4x4 i.e Discovery)
MOT expires end of Nov
Taxed until end of January 2013
146,000 miles
Full service history:
Oil & filter change
Water pump replaced circa April '09
Cam belt 'plunger' tensioner was replaced at last cambelt change
Coolant change
n/s/r shock was reaplced as old one was weeping
Reconditioned starter motor
Temp sensor replaced
Thermostat replaced
Impulse sensor replaced
New windscreen '03
Half leather in immaculate condition (the middles are still white/silver not grubby!)
Climate control - still blows cold
6 cd multichange
scuff on corner of rear and front bumper but can't be noticed (usual stone chips in the lower of the front bumper)
17" Alloys prestine not the 16" which some have (one has a slight scratch across a couple of spokes and slight kerbing)
Genuine coil packs replaced 3 months ago
Recent new spark plugs
Gearbox still tight
Looks and drives like a car which has covered 46k miles, don't think I've forgotten anything
07979 806305
£1,400

It's been a great car Matt!
Cheers Glenn
Amended now Zippyobrien!
My thoughts too czech mate, they have dropped a lot in price the mk1's, you do get a lot for your money. They're great eh. J has a mk3 one now, I quite fancied a mk2 fsi one, J's ex boss had one re-mapped, went well!
Really T? I think our trailer and Fiesta would put it over 1300kg and probably kill the poor 146k clutch, it's too good for a work horse lol. Saw yours on facebook, I like it!

Proper bargain this, can't see what else could compete at this price.
As for a discovery really don't bother, utter crap, have 5 mins (which will turn out to be an hour!!!)googling them too see just how bad they really are, early ones rot everywhere apart from the aluminium bits, steering boxes, electrics, trim, gearboxes, only good bit is the engine and even that's debatable.
Apparently they sorted the rot on the later ones but everything else goes wrong with them including engine issues as well.
They are good off road and cheap as chips as good points but I've seen them pass an mot one year with not much wrong then by the next it's totally rotten.
V8's just hurt on fuel in every way imaginable, less than 20 on gas, less than 10 making good progress,2.0l is a montego engine which says it all really.
Do yourself a favour and get a nice 2.8 pajero/shogun,only alternators to really worry about and they drive superb, not too bad on fuel either.
Another very tough bus is a Nissan terrano/ford maverick, taxicab engine that goes on forever, don't rust anywhere serious and don't even look that old in comparison to a vehicle that uses marina door handles,Sherpa lights and bits off a maestro van.
As the Aussies say "go to the bush in a discovery, come back in a landcruiser".

I've had three Shoguns (two 3.0's and a 3.5) and a Landcruiser and now I've got a Discovery and the Discovery is in a totally different league.
The Landcruiser was awful, had no off-road ability to speak of, engine was gutless and the electrics were a joke. Nothing worked on it and it was rotten. Was awful on-road too.
The Shoguns were better, but the engines couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding and were noisy as hell, interiors were thrown together and usually falling apart, full of electrical gremlins, although nothing as serious as what is common on the Toyota. And to drive they were like a glorified tractor. Only had three because I live in the countryside and life is much easier with a 4x4 in the winter, plus I really need one for towing my speedboat. Shoguns and cheap and plentiful, just put the awful drive down to being a nasty old 4x4 and something I'd have to live with.
Then I got a Discovery. 1997 3.9 V8i and it's unbelieveable. 90,000 miles with full main dealer history. Not a speck of rust on the body or undeneath. Interior is put together beautifully, looks like it's never been sat in. So well-appointed, cubby holes everywhere. The engine is a joy. Lovely, low V8 burble, quiet as a mouse under normal circumstances. Enough torque to pull up a tree. Apart from an inevitable bit of roll it drives just like a car, has a very decent turn of pace for something over two tonnes. 7 seats. And the construction of the thing makes it SO easy to work on. Only downside is the fuel consumption, but that doesn't worry me. Off Road ability is in a different league to anything else other than a Defender. Looks purposeful and commanding too. The Discovery was based heavily on the Classic Range Rover and there's a reason why that remained in production for 25 years without major changes and why it was still such a highly sought-after vehicle when production did cease. There's also a reason why Land Rovers are known as the best 4x4xFar...
Sure there are rough ones out there, but just don't buy one of them!
Oh and nice Skoda, should fly at that price, very nice these!

If we're talking pure offroad then I'm with you on how good a disco is but you can't surely tell me a 97 disco v8 drives like a car?the one I had drove like a tanker in a storm!!!!
And the rangey did run for 25 years granted but regularly got voted the most unreliable car of all time so not a brilliant ad really.
Funny how the majority of older ones had their engines ripped out and jap ones fitted instead.
Also the thread put up above gives you a well balanced view of pros and cons for the landy,as said in the thread the green one looked mint before being stripped for spares.
Scary.
Well you've had some odd luck then cos shoguns/pajeros are top bits of kit, can't say about the petrols as the 2.8 is a turbo diesel and an awesome truck and really good value second hand.

Anyway, free bump...
I've been trying to get my mate to buy one of these for ages, really great cars and well spec'd for the money. He prefers to spend thousands on a shitty Mitsy GTO which has had the engine out 3 times and still isn't right, much like being into cossies I guess.
I couldnt bring myself to sell that as cheap as that if it was mine, cant believe how little they fetch, octy vrs's of all mk's are one of the most underated cars ever by folks who havent owned one. Take some beating as a mid sized family car

I actually like the GTO's Rog! Not as reliable and economical as a vRS though.
That was my thought czech mate, but have a new winter vehicle now, and if it was left stood up for the winter it probably wouldn't have done it any good, the MOT expired end of November, would've needed a couple of tyres shortly ideally (still more than legal) and a sticky caliper as well as probably could've done with a cambelt next year (on time not miles), not a lot of money and the condition would've been worth it.
Didn't want to 'give it away' to someone for silly money, it was cheap enough as it is, then I would rather have tucked it under a cover for the winter. Gone to a new home now though
