Default Big spec Cosworth YB engine

Unfortunately the time has come to strip my Dad's Sapphire. It has been with him since 1999 just after I bought my own Series 1 and it has been maintained regardless through out his ownership.

I would offer the whole car up for sale at £18000 but I know that realistically it won't sell for that.

So first thing that needs to go is the engine.

It has only done about 2k miles in it's current specification of with 1k of them was done at running in speeds. It was last used on the road in 2009 and has been in storage ever since. The car is still complete and will start and drive. I can get a video of the engine running if anyone requires this.

The engine was built by MSD and was last measured on a rolling road producing 444bhp and 421lbft of torque at the wheels (bear in mind this is 4x4). It was built to this specification costing in excess of £14500 and the only thing preventing this from producing more power is the turbo. Ideally a tubular manifold and a Hart plenum as well would help it produce more power.

The MSD spec can be supplied with the engine detailing all the work they did on the engine (there is nothing for the head unfortunately although that was sourced and collected from NMS and a bare casting then assembled by MSD). Some parts were sourced by my Dad and supplied MSD with the items so don't appear in the parts list on the MSD document.

The engine spec is as follows.

  • NEW 200 block direct from Cosworth with new fitting kit.
  • Block machined and fitted with 10 (not the usual 6) long studs.
  • NEW small turbo head casting ported by Karl Norris who has since stopped porting heads to this specification (head ports are absolutely massive and are not needed for massive power. This head will flow enough air for serious numbers).
  • Fitting kit for head (core plugs, bungs, cam bearings, tensioner stud, oil check valves etc)
  • Inlet runners ported to match the inlet ports of the head.
  • New BD14 inlet cam
  • Above inlet cam machined and fitted with new WRC cam trigger sensor for phase.
  • Rocker cover machined to suit the new cam phase sensor.
  • Newman exhaust cam custom ground for higher lift (closed to a BD16) and lower duration (closed to a BD10) than the BD14 (to reduce overlap and low speed dilution of the incoming inlet charge).
  • GT3071R internally gate turbo with separate gate housing. Not the usual 3 bolt Cossie style housing so the waste gate penny doesn't open into the oncoming exhaust gas stream and fitted with a V band clamp style fitting. This could do with replicating with stainless but this made a serious difference to the car (idle suddenly increased by 200 rpm and the car had to be remapped as it ran massively lean at any boost level). Turbo has a .82 rear and .6 front.
  • Custom hand made exhaust made by JP Exhausts at Macclesfield costing over £1200 on it's own. It was made for the car and then modified when the Cossie 3 bolt fitting was swapped for the V band fitting. From the rear of the turbo the down pipe expands to 4 inch then splits into 2 x 2.5 inch pipes. These then travel the full length of the car and returns back to a singular 4 inch pipe before entering a straight through back box and out of a 4 inch rolled out tailpipe. It has 3 ports in it for lamba (ECU) lambda (dash mounted gauge) EGT thermocouple (dash mounted gauge).
  • New valves cut and ground to the valve seats.
  • New set of 16 followers.
  • Kent adjustable vernier pulleys.
  • New pistons from Cosworth machined to 7.5:1 ratio.
  • New virgin crank and rods. Checked before installation.
  • New small end bushes.
  • New front crank pulley.
  • Rotating mass dynamically balanced.
  • New Cosworth oil pump (not the early batch that failed but the later higher quality pump).
  • New 4x4 water pump.
  • New mains, big ends and thrust washers.
  • All new gaskets
  • Distributor blank to remove distributor (but still allow the oil pump to be driven).
  • Reyland big capacity 4x4 sump with new gated baffle.
  • Breather modified to return to sump.
  • Alcon 6 paddle clutch
  • Refaced flywheel
  • ARP big end bolts
  • Mountune WRC head gasket.
  • New cam belt and tensioner.
  • 82 degree thermostat.
  • New phase sensor to suit WRC cam trigger.
  • New coolant temp sensor
  • New air charge temp sensor
  • New PF09 throttle sensor
  • New crank position sensor
  • 4x4 plenum chamber with modified elbow (double the original size)
  • 14mm plenum spacer.
  • 2wd exhaust manifold refaced
  • All gaskets and seals where new at time of assembly.
Pretty much most of the engine was built using new parts. A lot of the bolts and stud where new at the time of assembly.

He is looking for 12k for the engine but it all depends what the individual purchaser want to come with the engine. The engine will not be split and will come as an absolute bare minimum of a tall motor (block and head). Now up for 7.5k.

Also available is the following items which have all been used with this engine/car but available separately. These will not be removed/sold until the engine is sold.
  • Genesis alloy fuel rail.
  • Aeroquip fuel line fittings and braided fuel hoses.
  • Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator.
  • 83lb Siemens injectors.
  • Bosch Motorsport fuel pump rated in excess of 200 litres at 8 bar of pressure (compared to the 200L at 5 bar of pressure the 044 supplies)
  • L8 ECU with coilpack conversion and closed loop fuel control via lambda sensor (mapped for this engine).
  • Pectel engine harness modified for additional sensors, lambda + knock (the main body of the harness is untouched. The extra sensors are run separately back to the ECU multiplug).
  • Radtec intercooler and radiator combination with 12" heavy duty Kenlowe fans (they work as good as if not better than the standards).
  • Ford small turbo escort coil pack units and plug leads.
  • Quaife big tooth MT75 4x4 gearbox.
  • Quaife ATB front diff including thick wall casing and strengthener plate to standard ratio (3.6:1).
  • 356mm AP Racing 6 pot front brakes.
  • 300 or 315mm rear brake conversion (can't remember which size exactly) using standard calipers.
  • Genuine WRC air to air injectors (the doubles).
  • Majority of the car was using silicon hoses so these will be available.
  • 13 row oil cooler and pipe work (may be reserved already).
  • Fully operational SECS monitor.
  • Dynajet AFR gauge.
  • Dynajet EGT gauge.
  • 60mm Collins boost gauge goes up to 40 psi.
  • 60mm Nomad boost gauge goes up to 40 psi.
  • Nomad oil pressure gauge.
  • Single gauge pillar pod.
  • Compomotive MO 8x18 old style wheels set of 5 with good condition Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres (about 6mm of tread).
  • Spec-R breather separator and tank
  • Spec-R header tank with sight glass
  • Double ignition module bracket

I have replied to those who have sent PMs.

Fuel rail may be reserved by a friend and same applies to the rear brakes. Also have someone lined up for the front diff, oil cooler and wiring harness.

If not they don't want them then...

Front diff - £1200
WRC 909 air to airs - £300
Rear brakes - £200
FPR (-6 fittings) - £120
Fuel rail (-6 fittings) - £100
Aeroquipped fuel lines (-6 fittings) - £200

Crikey - thought Mick would have this forever, I though I had not seen it for a while.

I have been in this and can vouch for it being a nice, yet bloody fast car.

The ECU with driver board is £250. If you want the Escort cossie small turbo coil packs they are £100 as there is 2 of them with 2 plug leads. The harness to suit with the twin modules and bracket is £100.

Hi, you won't save much as there isn't a lot to split from the engine so without the turbo, both manifolds, exhaust, flywheel, clutch and sump you're probably looking at 9.5k, or 10k if you want the sump as well. For 10k you would get the engine still as a sealed unit (sump, block and contents, head and contents, rocker cover) and also the cam belt/water pump/verniers/tensioner/pulleys/timing gear etc, but no PAS pump, alternator etc.

Chris, yes he has had it for years. Bought it as a usual stage 3, then it went to 400bhp, then 460bhp then this!

Unfortunately he can't warrant having a garage ornament that he can't afford to use now Mark. He has a new son and daughter as well as a loft conversion to think about now! Shame really as it has been with him for 14 years now!

Hi Mate. The intercooler and radiator is a combined unit (the rad mounts to the cooler) so I can't sell them separate as the rad would then be useless.

From my memory the synchros were replaced on the build and they haven't had much in the way of use since so they are still working as they should. It has a slightly taller 5th gear from what I remember (rest are standard) but the transfer box drop gears are standard ratios.

I'll confirm this when my Dad gets back off his holidays next week though.
