They will do massive miles if they have been looked after mate. You need to check swirl flaps, not sure if all suffer from this but know certain age ones do.
Thermostate is another item that can fail causing poor MPG
EGR Valves, clog up with lots of town driving
Turbos can go, seen these destroy engines but seems to be rare.
They are great cars, I guess your talking about the E60? Most seem to come with good specs

Yeah E60. Very nice cars, I was going to sell the Cosworth for one. Check for suspension replacements and good service history. Check with BMW as the stamps in the book are so easy to forge
I have an E39 530d, wicked car. Taken mine from 141k to 175 in just over a year. Few faults but nothing really mega, wheel bearing, heater resistor pack & that's about it really. Autos are heavy on brakes IMHO, but it's nearly 2 tons of car with no engine braking.
Love mine, wicked motorway tool, I do 500 miles a week just to work, I'm averaging 39.7 mpg, and that's doing 85-90 most if the time.

I never used to like them until I took one in part ex, I owned it for nealy a year! Great cars I had mine chipd and it was returning 42 mpg! Loads of power and shit loads of torq, I would recommend one, only trouble I had was the battery kept going flat and all I done was pluged it in to my computer and reprogramed the car battery charging system , mine had coverd 160k when I sold it!
i have a 520m sport and the fookin dash is always tellin g me their is something or other wrong lol.nice cars but does nothing for me tbh the wife uses it and loves it though
ive been told to remove the small blue wire from the battery as it tells the ecu if the battery is down any little bit and the car wont start even though the battery would be well able to start the car.
on replacing a battery as long as the battery is the same or better than whats in it ,the battery doesnt have to be registered to the ecu .

Still love the car though and much prefer it to the E55 it replaced!
