Default new project mondeo st220 going v8 RWD sleeper

well as my mate is getting the limelight with his viper powered cosworth, i thought its about time i got my arse in gear, i knew what engine i am using, just had to decide what to stick it in, options were, focus rs mk1, transit mk6/7, mk3 cortina taunus coupe, sierra 3dr, or a mondeo st220 estate, but an 06 plate st220 hatch came up at the right time/price, with full history, 45k miles and a dead engine, (actually the engine was just noisy, till mark collected it and 22 miles later had a rod out the side) so it got bought,

i wanted to b different, get away from what everyone else does, so,

this mondeo st220 is going v8 RWD, but will look all factory, exept the wheels, amd its not going sierra floor pan, i want an axle that will take the power, and an un modified floor pan, going the route of the bolt in focus kit, so floor should need very little work, i had a bolt in kit focus up on the 2 post in america seeing how its done a few years back, hoping the mondeo needs even less work being a bigger car,

the viper engine/gearbox is mine, the car is chris's, the viper engine was from my kit car, thats now going v8 4wd, the mondeo is a test bed to build up a lower spec v8 (lower spec than i want in the kit car) and see how the mondular ford v8 is to work with and tune, the mondeo will only!!!! be around the 750hp at the wheels, and only a 4.6, the kit will b going full out 5.4 race engine with bigger supercharger or twn turbo if my mate gets his own way, i already have the heads and the 16 injector inlet for the kit project, both of which come from a ford GT supercar, the 5.4 kit car block will also b from a ford GT supercar because they are factory dry sump and alloy block, the 4.6 block that it looks like i'm going to use comes from an early 96> cobra mustang, apparently they are about the strongest alloy block u can buy for good money

looking into axle options, i like te simple mustang 8.8 solid axle for simplicity of fitment, but i'm looking into the ford falcon control blade rear axle that may just b a straight bolt on, and might just take the power, as the falcon came with some power under to bonnet.

It wasn't 22 miles before i put a rod out and a hole in the sump it was 12 lol

To be fair the engine was very noisey when I picked it up and i did behave no more than 2000rpm, having the 6 speed box helped lol.

Those wheels do look good on my mondeo tho lol.

Now get your arse in gear and get me some parts over we have a viper powered sierra to race at the pod lol

Good project, I've always wanted to do a newer Mondeo as I like the look better than the Mk1. Btw mine has the OE floorpan and not a Sierra one

nice to know someone can think of doing stuff without the need of a sierra floor pan, having seen with my own eyes how easy a focus is converted to rwd and i don't understand why they need to cut the floor out and fit a sierra one, and with dvla starting to go after cars with major mods i wanted to keep it simple.

and pics of ur car that might help with this project, like a shot looking up from the floor to the underside of car on a ramp

this engine in the front would make an interesting fwd project for someone 3.5 ecoboost, twin turbo. same v6 block as the 3.0/2.5 so would bolt straight in http://www.ebay.com/itm/Engine-Trans...46df28&vxp=mtr

Cool engine that.

So i take it you will be cutting the middle of the floor out and fitting a gearbox tunnel.

no, not the plan, maybe slice along the top and add a bit, but the tunnel should b quite big anyway, will know more when it gets stripped out, but i want to keep the shell as original as pos, the focus tunnel is modified so little u can put all original plastic bits back in and it looks factory, so as the mondeo is a bigger car i'm really hoping to get away with even less mods, reading wiki, the original mondeo was designed to take front or rear wheel drive, and the mk3 is only slightly different from the mk1 apparently, we won't know 100% till its started on, want to get axle on first, then get the gearbox fitted to a dummy plastic engine that i can get for hot rod building, that way its a little lighter to work with, i would get a dummy gearbox, but can't find one anywhere

I thoght of that too - when you think how hard/ expensive it is to get 300Hp out of the 3.0Lv6- and how easy it is on the Focus ST - has anyone done this?

My car runs an MT75 box which isn't a big casing compared to some so your tunnel may need to be bigger. Fitting an old Sierra floor pan to a much more modern bodyshell isn't a great idea as its so much weaker IMHO.

cheers martin, will have a good look later when i park up,

1eye (chris) above is chief builder, after doing such a good job on his viper sierra, mark 24v wiring is on wiring and being chief goffa, i will just be driving about america, finding bits and sending them to the uk,

i'm not going anything sierra, because of the power i'm looking for, i'm going cobra mustang 8.8 solid axle, should make the axle mounting a little easier.

i'm wanting to go more the kugal komponents route for the convesion, that means a front cradel for the engine, something like this

focus engine bay

u leave the original mondeo front subframe in place, just cut the back out of it so gearbox will fit

and as its a solid axle, with mounts like a mk3/4/5 cortina, go a triangular 5 link setup with the lower outer mounts going forward to the original mondeo chassis mount for the trailing arm it has to keep the wheel in place,

focus kugal setup

tunnel in the mk3 i'm hoping is a little bigger that the mk1, so needs even less modding for the t56,

what kugal did for steering was to swap the struts from side to side, so the syeering arm then is at the front of the strut not the back, moving the rack to the front part of the engine bay, making steering reletively easy to sort out, maybe going electric power steerig,
