Default Subaru Impreza or Mitsubishi Evo....?

As above...
been looking at possible getting a new daily driver and can't decide which one of these would be the best buy...

£5k budget

I prefer the Impreza mainly due to looks and the fact I've driven one and liked it. But I know the Evo's are well rated too..

What do you lot think? and why

Reasons why would be good!
the evo seems more tuneable for less outlay?

EVO every time. Scoobs have become a bit of a chav chariot as the prices have fallen so much. Loads have been purchased cheap and then not maintained. Not the cars fault

Plenty of decent ones about and they can be very very capable.

Agreed there's lots of sheds about, but taking the fact I will find a good example of either car for the price.... which one should it be

I'd go Scoob at that budget, and I have 2 Evos

Reason being 5k is average to below average condition 5/6, or good condition 4.

Although the 4 is fine, it has it's negatives (prone to crank walk, not as visually dramatic and the 5/6, smaller brakes, small arches so skinny tyres are the order of the day)

A 5 or 6 at that money is unlikley to be either mint or in 100% good order, you might get lucky though, so still worth a look.

Looking at Scoobs for sale, you seem to get newer nicer cars for the same money that an Evo would cost. As a daily you'd want reliability and and very average power (280-350bhp), which a Scoob would surely deliver easily enough.

At 5k you are at the bottom of both markets really and need to be careful when viewing, but I would say scooby as they are slightly cheaper to maintain than an evo, I have a scoob but a twinscroll import model and it is superb but you won't find one within budget.

To be fair no Evo IV is going to have its own engine in now they will all have a V onwards fitted, but as said you prob wont get a good one for 5k the market is flooded with dogs and if you get one of those your fooked! The Evo is by far a higher performance car in every way but then the running/servicing costs are prob twice as high so i would say its best to think what your going to use it for i.e Track (Evo) or Road (Sooby)! As for the tuning my engine its self is standard @65k the only things i had done are to change the exhaust manifold and system, 8MR turbo and a Motec M800 ecu and its runs 12.1 @ 113mph everytime where as my friend has a Scooby P1 with full exhaust heads back, front mount intercooler, 750cc injectors, TD05 turbo Simtek ecu with lanch control, a/c removed etc etc and cant get close to that, i no mine being a RS helps... no ABS, AYC, A/C, elec windows or central locking and low ratio gearbox but he spent almost twice what i have! I think im running 380ish and as its only used for tracking dont really need anymore than that!

Rubbish !

Both are expensive to maintain but scooby options are s
Cheeper to purchase like for like

I own a old impreza and I bet it's more than capable for 90% of people who drive cars

If they don't go wrong they are fine though but chase power and they are stupid money to mod,,, impreza costs more for mods for some reason but I prefer how it drives for me

They ain't a slow or shit car compared to a evo,, I bet if I drove Si B's evo and he drove my shed he would still do laps on track quicker (providing he didn't break it first)

Yes they are a poormans performance car but remember that a Uk spec wagon is not the same as a jap STI version in terms of power ect nor is the price with them

I've had my impreza for a while and think is does well considering it's a inferior car IMO

I never said Scoobys where rubbish in anyway just said the Evo is better out of the box everyone knows that As for driving no he defo better guy used to be a semi-pro racer and its not hard to drive in a str8 line is it Also i never said nothing about them breaking, Ive had 3 Evo's so im more than aware of the faults each model has as i am of the Scoobys also! And dont forget the Evo has to be serviced every 6months where as the Scoobys are once a year

I would consider something else for the dailey duty. Both of these cars will drink fuel for fun. Neither will be massivly reliable.

I would go BMW Diesel M Sport 330d and get it mapped. Would be as quick 99% of the time, offer much better MPG and be a much nicer place to be in.

For a daily I'd go scoob as you don't have Ayc to think about when servicing
So the scoob can be done on the drive if you wanted to do it your self

I know the evo's can be as well but a lot more involved

Impreza easily.

Far easier to live with and use every day.

I'm a big Evo fan, and for some people and some occasions they can be a better choice, but for a fast road car for £5k, Impreza all day long.

There are some dogs about thanks to pikey owners who don't understand what the cars are all about and just ragging them without correct maintenance, but for £5k you've got the pick of TONS of good ones, all kinds of different models.

For a daily driver, I'd be looking at new age WRX's

Blob wrx as above link is easy to live with daily I had one for three years and loved every minute of it, never had anything go wrong apart from needing general service items. They are best with ppp or exhaust and remap. Mine was running 265bhp and was great. Since then I have changed to a twinscroll import and this is in a different league, to many people compare the evo to uk sti's or wrx's not a fair comparison. Try a spec c or import spec twinscroll car and the difference would be minimal.

Evo for me

When you see an Impreza, no matter how good it is, its not somthing i'd take any notice of, but when you see an Evo going past it always makes me have a good gander at it, the only downside with them is the fuel economy and the turning circle! But im sure you can live with that if your gonna buy either!

Yeah, totally... a £5k Saph is the only logical choice if you're wanting a reliable daily driver in 2012.

Back on topic, as a daily... Scoob.

Can get a newage STi for c5k these days, which makes for a reliable and wicked cross country performance car with a couple of small modifications.

They are 5k because of the bills attached and the depreciation of them, as said I love my impreza, I also love evo's too but if I had 5k it would be a impreza

Though ve warned the price should it go wrong will bring tears to a grown man

Gearbox btw is a piss easy job, don't listen to anyone apart from its fucking heavy it's piss to change,,,, and I've done a few but a new impreza comes with a 6 speed so it's bullet proof ( not too sure about the evo lads standard boxes lol

i've had both(well still got my evo)
i never liked subaru's as i thought they were to soft,
but got 1 for the mrs anyhow as its what she wanted
i'm now converted about them, had it 3 years and it never realy went wrong
was 100% reliable, all in all a good car
not had my evo 7 long now but its nicer everday car to drive except that its stupidly high geared,
its 3k revs at 60mph in 5th? drinks fuel
as an everyday car i prefer the evo but 5k budget wont get you anything amazing
so for you budget you'll get a better subaru i think, both are good cars if looked after

An s4 audi could be a compromise?
But for me a £5k scoob won't give you any hassles at all and the evo's starting to get to chav chariot money now and they seem to rot to cossie levels. My classic impreza flew the mot every year without a hint of rust or welding on it and it never got particularly well cared for.
You won't be able to drive either car near its limits so I wouldn't get too hung up on what has marginally better handling or straight line power.

what are the most pricey bits mate? I can imagine getting reamed by a main dealer but the aftermarket seems to big that all parts available anyway?

Also, a few people keep harping on about twin scroll version? Im guessing its an upgraded turbo but what other differences? apart from massive insurance costs as an import...!

Nothing wrong with the RS 5 speeds can put over 500bhp though those no trouble I guess whay your getting at is the GSR 6 speeds and the diff bolts breaking in the V's and VI's

Well i've had plenty of both

Tbh 5k WON'T get you a great Evo, i'd go for a TYPE-R versions if i were you, manic acceleration these have, , alot of Evo's now suffer from rot on the underside so be careful there too, good luck with whatever you choose..

3 months ago i sold a audi a4 1.8t and got a 53 plate wrx sti in black with 75k on the clock , 2 owners and full history for £6300 . Great car the only downside is the fuel ,its terrible .

My 350bhp 3 door dont drink half as much but the subaru has the 4 doors nice size boot and a nice bit of power . Most daily cars will drop in value so wouldnt and dont worry about it .
