Default release bearing ?

hi all wonder if this is just release bearing or the rest of the clutch etc. if i press the clutch down just a bit it rattles, if right down sounds normal, when you let of on the clutch it rattles when nearly right up same position. when driving along it sounds normal. can you tell when you take the clutch out if it is the release bearing or the fly wheel had it. i would change the complete clutch any way. the car is a mk3 130 tdci . any advise or has any one had similar problems, the car has only done 62k. cheers frankie

It's hard to say, but whatever the cause the solution is gearbox out - so you'll want to do the bearing, DMF and clutch anyway, so it's kind of imaterial - Just annoying!

If you encounter starting issues, then it's definitely the DMF, as the swarf from it disintegrating bungs the starter up.
