Whats better, powdercoating or painting? I haven't a clue really as what is a better option, the only thing I can say is I'm guessing painting can be done on a DIY basis, wheras powdercoating can't? (Or am I wrong here). I'm thinking about things like brackets, suspension arms etc.

I once had a quote at a classic car resto place to powder coat the wheels on my old r1 gold and they said in there opinion painting them is a much better option because if I chip the powder coat and water gets in there it will start to peal off

If its engine parts powdercoat them, as my painted bits are flaking not too long after i have painted them

I don't like powder coating as all the stuff I've had done in the past got chipped as its too hard.

 

I had all my running gear powder coated it all chipped
So painted the lot

 

Paint over powder coating had a subframe done and it did'nt last long.
so this time round its paint for me.

 

I think that powder coating looks awesome but it is too thick and too brittle. I had all my suspension components powder coated but would not do it again.

I would use off the shelf non drip gloss next time. I'm no concourse bufty and so the finish would not be important.

 

As soon as you chip powdercoat, it'll peel off in no time. Very hard wearing though.

You can get very hard paint these days, makes powdercoating a bit obsolete IMO.

Hmm... Maybe it depends what is? I've hammerited alot and it has been quite durable, but the finish is better in powdercoat IMO. I did a top grille on my MK6 Fez, back in the day, it chipped like mad when painted, but when powdercoated it lasted alot longer. I did massively de-grease it though!

i had my front ARB done, and now it's covered in rust,

but i'm looking to get it re done along with my subframe , engine mount and battery tray all sorted

so do i get them blasted then painted? or cleaned and painted?

 

All my powder coat as been fine... But then again my mate owns a powder coaters and it gets extra treated.... And the items have to be blasted right.

 

I see, I'd like to get all my suspension arms and brake calliper mounting brackets treated, they all look really sorry for themselves, want to strip them, blast them paint etc. Just a little light resto work.

 

Sounds to me that you guys have been going to dodgy powder coating companys. Ive been doing powder coating for over 6 years. The reason its better,yes thats right its better is due to the paint being chip resistant. It sounds to me that they are using the wrong type of powder,as you can't apply any old powder to something that flex alot. Secondly its most likely the chemical balance when treated is incorrect or they never treated the items in the first place, which will cause flaking and chipping easily. Powder is the industrial standard. If it was that rubbish then they wouldn't use it on buildings,even car body paint and wheels.

im with the above! all the powder coating ive had done has been great! lasted years and the finish has been great. Ive even done a few bits myself that have turned out pretty good.

Powder coating costs more, but is better for running gear. I once went to an auto jumble and bought a gallon of hammerite smooth for Ł3 and sprayed it on all the running gear to the sierra after sandblasting it all. it looked fine but very soon chipped and got scruffy.
If you can afford powder coat, i would. if not, DIY paint is very easy and looks as good, just isnt a durable. imo obv

 

+1.... My mate told me it would be better and last longer and mines no different 9 months on... Mine was all blastered and treated properly with the right powder.

 

i had some done buy a company it was total shit if u tapped it with a screw driver it chipped off , had to take the parts off car again and get them done againby another company that new what they were doing , had no problems with it now

 

This got me thinking! Is there not a different type of coating that could be used for under body parts, like a plastic or polymer coating.

 

What about for alloy wheels.
