Default Help! Can I use this oil on my car!

I have drained all the oil from my 2005 Mondeo 115 TDCI.......I have now realised the oil I have is not 5-30 but 5-40 Shell Helix fully synth' oil.....Will my car be ok having this in, also I dont know if it is for petrol or diesel....Or is it ok to a petrol oil in a diesel engine?

Phew!! Thanks mate!! It was a neighbour who came out earlier and said 'Hope you got the right oil for that as they must have 5-30 diesel oil' Well I bought this Shell 5-40 petrol oil a few months ago for my Mi-16 205 but then sold the car so it has been sat in my shed since thus me thinking it was fine for my TDCI?!

It will run but is thicker than it should be, so it won't lube how it should do. I would buy the proper stuff. Halfords have a deal on Magnatec at mo so is only Ł17.50. And that is a lot cheaper than an engine repair!

Oh....This is a bit worrying as she has had a Re-map, EGR blanked, De-catted....So will most probably need the proper stuff? I looked on the back of the Shell oil and it does say it is ok for diesels, but this 5-40 thing is of concern as it is that bit thicker. I suppose I could always try and sell the Shell oil on Ebay as it was over Ł40 when I bought it so may get some interest.....Or maybe put some Wynns oil treatment in as that is meant to drop the larger number?

nearly every single car from 2004 onward seems to have 5w-30 now and we put the same oil in petrols as we do diesels
