Some of the Ford Explorer jeeps used 8" or 8.8" if you can find one.

 

the 4x4 8.8 is no good in a car, the prop flange is off centre, the mustang axles are central,

I'd assume the axle would need modified to fit the car anyway, so that wouldnt really matter.

I think mine was an old Mustang unit, I had to widen each axle tube by about 40-50mm or so.

 

i believe its basicly a bolt in kit, they do the conversion state side to the only model of sierra they got, the xr4ti, basicly a sierra xr4i body with a 4 pot 2.3 turbo engine, they pull the baby 2.3 out and fit proper engines, and uprate the rear to 8.8

All of the UK Ford Explorers came with the 8.8 fitted with a 3.73:1 ratio, an LSD and 31 spline shafts. They do have an off-centre pigs head but normally you have to narrow them anyway as they too long. Depending on what car it's going under there is a cheap way of narrowing the axle using two 'short' sides, but still works out around 55" from memory. They are cheap from breakers though as no one wants one as they don't break - around £80 is normal. Andy Robinson/Hauser/Chris Isaacs will all narrow the axle and supply and fit shafts to any length for around £650.

It's a good option as 8 inch axles are really drying up i this country - I was looking for one for quite some time!

 

i think u would find them to narrow for most cars if narrowed, i put an explorer axle on a capri mk3 and with granada cossie wheels it was perfect, i know the wheels were the wrong pcd but they were close enoght to roll it around on, the purches for the leaf springs was in the right place as well, just the prop flange was to far to the drivers side, would have had to cut floor, it was then fitted to a p100 and other than moving the perches it worked spot on, width was spot on as well.

and with a bit of modding the sierra hand brake cable fits, all uk explorer 8.8's have disc with inboard shoes for the handbrake.

i'm thinking of shipping in half a dozon of these axle, with different ratios, if anyone is interested, i need 1 or 2 for projects i have planned, so may as well ship a few extras, as i'm in the states for the rest of the year i can sort shipping from this side, should make it cheaper, pm me if interested i'll b going with 2.73 ratio because of light weight and big power, but there is a wide choice of ratios

 

The Mk3 Capri is the widest of the classic Fords. My Cortina needs something narrower than that, especially with the wheels and offset I'm running. Escorts are even narrower again.

I was looking for a 4-stud 8.8 with 28 spline shafts and an LSD which do seem to be cheap in America when they come up.

what ratio u looking for, the 4 stud are from the old fox body mustang, 59.5 inches hub face to hub face, 2.73 and 3.27 are the normal factory ratios, but u could get just about any ratio u want after market, let me know what u are looking for and i'll tell u the ratio thats close

 

It's for a 4-cylinder turbo so looking for something nearer 3.7. The plan was to use the CWP from the Explorer axle otherwise.

My axle needs to be 52 inches wide but I can;t find anyone in this country who will re-spline/shorten the original 31spline shafts. They will shorten the 28 spline items hence why I was thinking of going for a Fox body axle, but I might as well just fork out on a set of custom Moser shafts.

 

If you go for an 8.8" and are altering it's width, you jsut buy new custom shafts to suit whatever wheel PCD you are using. That way there is no messing about.

I had all my shafts made to suit the Ford centre bore and 5 x 112 PCD

 

well the ratio is easy then 3.73, think thats about the most common ratio of them all.

i've always used http://www.jwtransmissions.co.uk/ for any axle/prop shaft work, very helpful, not far from the dartford tunnel

 

new crownwheel and pinions are cheap anyway. I think only like $200 or so

 

52" in a mk 2 tina will be too wide unless you are running fwd type offset wheels or leaving

the car way up in the air.

Andy Robinson narrowed my Atlas to 50" , and I do run the car slammed,

but I might even go narrower than that yet mate.

I'm still on the original English and on 8J wheels with an ET10 I've still got loads of room - a good couple of inches - as my arches have been extended and tubbed inside as well.

It looks a bit underwheeled at the minute in fact, and I was going to go wider with the wheels but they looked silly when I tried a 5 inch dish. It will go on a standard sized axle and maybe a little lower and I'll see where I am from there I think.

 

Guys i really need an 8" as the rest is to heavy for what i want I have no clue on the ratios i need or require HELP.

28 spline is good thou.

 

What about some Volvo axles ?

or if looking to America again, you should b e able to guy a GM 10 bolt very cheap. As all the Camaro guys get rid of them as they wont handle 500+ for very long.

just get curries to build you one ,thats who did mine and you can specify lengh stud pattern etc and is half the price of a built atlas

 

curries have priced this up £2000 all in and shipping so not bad if you have that money

well if thats too expensive look out for a used one but i garantee it wont have the correct ratio your after,but at 2k its still half the price of a floating atlas.out of curiousity what power are you planning to put through it ?

 

When £2k will buy everything from right axle, right ratio, custom shafts so there are no fitment hassles, whatever LSD you want etc

Just how much cheaper will a used axle cost by the time it is fitted ? There may be some saving ( if if course you can find one ), but it really wouldnt be that much.

stick a 9 inch in then, plenty of them available and more ring an pinion options,I agree with Stevie though custom made axle for 2k ,fit and forget,mine was 8inch and had some real abuse,Get saving or get Stevie to sponsor you lol
