Default Pinto valve springs

Hey fellas , my friend has just had an new engine built up for his mk1 . Its now a 2.1 with a newman cam and solid tappets etc . He chose not to take my advise and buy some uprated valve springs and now we are having a problem with the standard springs fully compressing causing the engine to lock and the belt to jump teeth .

Can anyone advise me as to which are the best uprated valve springs to go for ?

A critical measurement you need to do is the valve spring with valve fully closed.

36mm is the "fitted" length of the spring

If its too tight you need to machine the head to allow the spring to increase its length

I made a tool to do this exact job when I build Pinto engines

Kent Cams twin valve springs are uneven length but I do not use Pinto valve springs I use a pair of matched length valve springs and the tool I made allows the valve guide support to remain in place but the head around the guide is able to be machined

(Hope this makes sense)

Took 2 days on a spark eroder to make the tool

Yes I know it is an inaccurate "Coast Down" Rolling Road BUT as I always use the same rollers I am able to make usefull comparisons and it works for me !

Thanks for the advice , seems funny why you've had to do that ?Id of thought with the right springs for the cam you shouldn't need to do that ?

Ive just been lookig on the newman info page and found that with the phase 4 cam theres 2 choice of spring . Doubles or singles , id of thought doubles but why have singles listed aswell ?

PS good power from your pinto what spec is it ?

Have a read of this PDF - very usefull

How to tune a Ford SOHC

I have been constantly developing my engine for over 8 years but it is "basically" a 2143cc 8 valve

As an idea of the level of work I have carried out here is the inlet ports latest reworking

The 1600 will be "Historic Spec" legal so mods are limited

The key to power is the compression ratio and how the engine is put together

The engine will be going into an historic spec MKII escort rally car
