Default Focus mk1 1.6 zetec (high mileage)

Hi all,

I might be looking at a focus over the weekend as a runaround it has 130k on the clock. Are these engines reliable if looked after at this mileage?

Thanks

Anthony

Expect them to last at least 200k with proper maintenance

They are, only if maintained well and the oil level has been checked regularly. They are prone to bottom ends if the oil level drops. Also check for blue smoke at high revs/over run, they're known for killing piston rings/valve stem seals.

My head gasket went on my old escort gti at about 90k and my dads 1.6 went at 100k. Both well looked after.

Its reliable, however it won't want anything outside regular servicing. A common problem with this is idle control valve, which is very easy to recover by yourself by taking off the top of the engine and clean with the carb cleaner. It's part are cheap and easy to find at http://www.buyautoparts.com/carmodels/Ford/Focus.html

The 1.6 zetec SE is prone to oil usage. I had one at about 140k and it was using more oil than fuel, still ran well though, but got a deal on a new engine with only 28k, dropped that in and that started using oil after about 50k.

They are quite a good engine, just keep an eye on the dipstick!

I got a Focus Collection with 156k miles on the clock really cheap since it was running like shit and the guy was gonna scrap it. Fitted a new rocker gasket, plugs etc and it ran fantastically.. sold it ages ago and the car is still going well being used daily.

Cheers,
Grant

ive got a 06 1.4zetec se focus as a daily driver with 178km (about 120miles) one most reliable cars ive owned even done 1200 miles in uk last week flying around outside lane of motorways with 3 fat blokes and full boot still manages 40 mpg. think biggest problems with them is crap oil and skipping service intervals

Good engines, not had one issue with mine!

I Have to say, I disagree about the oil usage, I don't have that issue!

Just make sure (Although it's a given it should have been done) that the cambelt has been changed, Fords recommendation is 100K, or 10 years, whichever comes soonest, but you would actually always change before both of these figures.

This is an expensive job, as it's labour intensive, so even if you do yourself, it's still a lengthy job.
