Default Clio 172 track/race car

I bought this a couple of weeks ago for a bit of fun after getting rid of my R8.
The first day I had it I managed to snap the gearbox mount , so while that was stripped out to be replaced I moved the battery to the boot.

Decided to port the inlets as heard they can be fairly restrictive and its a free mod. This shows the over lap that got ground off and smoothed. I was also shocked to find out this is the standard ports on the head.

Lastly I fitted a switched breaker for the battery in the back rather than running a inline fuse.

Default Clio 172 track car( high comp engine build)

I still have a poly bush kit to fit to the bottom dogbone mount on the engine but its a new mount thats been recently fitted so has very little movement justnow.

Gave the inside a quick clean up and painted the gear shift surround, just need some carbon film to go on the cage where you get in to save it from getting scratched up.

Last night I had it on the rollers at Sitech to check the fueling. So just need to get it on track now as so far Ive only used it on the road.

Wouldn't you be better with proper cage padding rather than carbon film Neil?
Be rude not to go for bodies.

The top part of the cage is padded, it was just the section at the side of the seat i was going to cover as it gets scratched up with the harness when getting in and out.

Power figure seems a bit optimistic TBH, but looks a nice example.

Whats with the airhorn though? does it play the jukes of hazzard theme?

I know chip I would think its probably mid 170's. The horn was already on it no dukes though just a normal loud horn.
I was tempted to buy that rs2 inlet that was forsale on Clio sport but it's sold now.
How hard is it to wire omex into the standard loom?

Not very hard at all mate, you need to run a seperate crank sensor though, but omex do a bracket for that or its easy to make one.

if you go bodies though, you need to mess around changing pedal etc, as yours is a cup so on flybywire of course, which means the management light will be on as the standard ecu wont likelosing the pedal even though its not running the negine anymore

Did my first ever track day last night running knockhill in reverse , which wasnt as bad as I thought it would be. The car was faultless I did 3 sessions in it and my mate did another 2.
Hope to get the suspension parts fitted for the next time out then get the bodies on soon after.

Suspension parts to be fitted.

Power parts
I need to make a new backing plate or may buy a bigger filter ,this one is fairly tight to the side of the trumpets but does have good clearance at the mouths. Im running Jenveys,20mm jenvey spacers, backing plate then 60mm trumpets giving 120mm from butterfly to the end of the trumpet.

Was that the silver evo 7 think use blew past us in the straight in one session when my mate was driving. The little clio and my mates yellow 106 were holding there own against some quicker cars so quite chuffed for a first time out.

Those cams need to be timed in advanced to get the best from them.

Well had a couple of hours on the clio last few days, engine mounts, suspension mounts fitted along with the poly dogbone mount.
Ive also tried to tidy up the door panel trims as the fit on them is very poor.

Then since the car isnt going to get used due to me being away with work I started trial fitting the ITB's.
Looks like clearance on the rad might be ok with just a slimline fan fitted.

One thing I had not thought of though is where do you take a vac feed from for the brakes? can i just tap into one trumpet or is it better to link into them all ?

Im also still on the hunt for an ECU and loom , would prefer to run Omex as its tried and tested.

Well got the manual pedal fitted today and the cable run, the movement is realy smooth and pedal position is almost exactly the same as the old pedal.

Name: 1345917914.jpg

I have also trimmed the front panel, moved the standard rad forward and started to remove the original wiring, im not sure whether to bag and tuck it out the way or cut and cap all the cables then tuck them back into the loom covering.

Plan is to have a rubber mounted plate where the battery originaly sat with both the original and aftermarket ecu mounted on it.

I now have a Omex 600 ecu and a Reverie backing box for the air filter to give a bit more clearance for the fuel rail. I also think I have sourced a omex clio loom, so hopefully all I have left to buy is the ecu coms cable and sensors from Omex
Plans are to get the ecu wired in and the car started asap when I get home from work then fit the cams and a timing belt kit, Im just trying to find out about timing in the 197 cams.

Got my new filter and backing box fitted today , still unsure if Im better to change my trumpets or not. Justnow they are 80mm long and 100mm wide so have had to be trimmed slightly as they overlap, with the new filter I think I could fit 110mm long trumpets.

I also mounted up my ecu, and Omex on a plate over the gearbox mount, that is mounted on rubber vibration mounts.

I got a loom yesterday from Swede cup that he wasnt using but when I started to check it out it was a mess so I binned it ,and ordered a new loom and crank sensor adaptor from Omex so it should almost be plug and play.

This is what I mean about the trumpets, they have a larger bell mouth than the normal ones used on clios which are 88mm wide I think.

Name: 1348091385_zps5ce91380.jpg

I also had a re-think on the fuel pipe rather than having the section of aeroquip hose sleeved and clamped over the original hose, which im sure would of been fine I have fitted a barbed -6 fitting so it is similar to the way the original end was fitted. I think I will try and find a small clip to fit aswell as a back up.

I think I could just squeeze 120mm trumpets in but it would leave them very close to the filter, justnow they are 90 mm but have a larger inlet surface than normal.
My aim is over 200bhp per ton so with the cams ,I think the 90's should be enough but may loose out on torque in the mid range.

The R8 was a great car but I think I kept comparing it to my old 996 , and even though it did everything well it just didnt excite like the Porsche did.
I then planned on going down to one car and buying a flat to rent, but have since handed in my notice at work after 11 years so put that Idea on hold for a bit.

Waiting on the omex loom turning up today so thought I would try the set of 16mm spacers I bought on. Im going to run the 16's on the fornt and order up a pair of 15's for the rear.
