Running about in the car today and I noticed at around 5k in third it cut the ignition very briefly as if it was over boosting with no chip, I pulled pipe off actuator and it ran well over 15 very briefly so I know the ecu is chipped.

It only done it 2 or 3 times today but I've shat myself every time! Could it be the coil breaking down? Am I worth going for the group A coil? Is it worth the cash?

boost cut. 100%. as it allows more boost in lower gears it leads you to think it must be chipped. in 4/5th it will cut sooner, in 3rd it will cut a bit slower. the higher gear= more load. it typically allows 1+3seconds above the 10psi thjreshold before it feels like someones pulled the ht lead off. normal accelerating you dont really hold it at peak boost anywere near 3 seconds unless your absolutly ragging it. only in higher gears you see full boost sooner as it takes longer for the engine to spin up. sometimes 1 second, sometimes 4-5 seconds.

 

Im not so sure, its only sometimes and I tried it on same bit of road in the same gear at the same boost and it never done it at all! Im away a longer run tonight so ill see then! Shame you cant data log on these old MFI escorts haha!

 

try a chipped ecu. or wind the actuator out so that you get about 9 psi and try it. one full turn is aprox 1 psi irc. the fact you get well over 10psi can confuse hell out of you. it did me. its not very scientific, sometimes you see 15psi sometimes you get the violent boost cut at a touch over 10psi, usually in higher gears.

 

Hmm actuator fully wound off and it's boosting to 12psi (with a very brief 14psi spike sometimes) Never had this problem before, it's just developed since the last top end rebuild. I've just ordered a clutch (long story) as I lunched my box at the weekend and have a spare box to fit!

Can't get my head around it!

Want the boost problem sorted before I take it to AVA and look like a helmet when it cuts whist they are trying to set it up!

 

Another question, how does the ecu cut the boost? The pipes on the AMAL Vv are looped together? Actuator is piped straight from compressor housing.
