Default Caliper Carrier Bolt - Should I Get Them From Ford?

Hi all,

I was changing the discs and pads and a rear caliper on my ST170 yesterday. Got to the last corner, the one needing the new caliper and rounded a bolt on the carrier.

Was just wondering if this is something that I should get from Ford (bit of a trek for me) or if I could go elsewhere and get it matched as long as it's hard enough? I'm thinking I'll just go to Ford, but it'll no doubt be extortionate.

Cheers,

Alan

As long as it is the correct spec it will be fine, prob about 30p for one.

Cheers Will. I've just phoned my local ford garage and they want 96p - I can just about stretch to that, despite being Scottish!

Any idea how best to go about removing the rounded one?

Removing the old one ? Get a socket, batter it onto the old bolt and then undo - got to be worth a try.

How round is round? You might get away by using a 6 sided impact socket instead of 12 point?

If not:
Cut two flats on it so you can get an adjustable spanner onto it.

Use lots of heat on the carrier.

Of that fails then you will need to drill it out.

Can't multiquote on my phone, but cheers for both the suggestions.

Mr S1 - have tried that already to no avail. Guess I could try and file it a bit, as it's currently a bit big for the next socket down, even with a hammer. Also quite tricky to get access.

Will - might try cutting to flats on it. Another idea was to weld a nut on to it? That seems like quite an easy option, and I know plenty of people who weld.

depending on what bolt it is, sometimes removing the other bolt, and levering the carrier up will turn it just enough to loosen it a bit

Good idea! Never thought of that. You must have done a few brakes in your time?

As long as they're high tensile, you'll be fine using a bolt from anywhere.

In terms of the rounded bolt, either weld a nut on, or a scrap bit of bar to loosen it.
