Default Mk3 xr2i needs an engine rebuild in North Wales, any recommendations for where to go?

Hi, newbie here,
I've just bought a 92 xr2i 1800 that turned out to have an oil leak and ran dry on the A55 leaving me stranded in a layby for 4 hours....
Its done engine damage (can't tell you what, not mechanically minded at all, just love the cars) but the AA man (previous Ford mechanic) said it needs an engine rebuild/reconditioned which I'm prepared to do. Ideally I'd like to keep the engine I've got.

Can anyone help with where to go? I'm in Bangor but I've never found a garage to settle with out here and my local Ford garage wanted to refer me out to Chester...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

did the engine lock up or just go noisy?

could try just fixing the leak and filling with oil first

easiest bet is get another know good engine, just a gasket set will cost the same as a good used engine
as where to get it put in ive not a clue
could do some upgrading too while you are at it 2.0!

I lost momentum at about 80mph a few times and could tell something wasn't right so pulled into a layby where she stalled and then just wouldn't restart. I noticed as I was pulling over the engine was 'ticking'?
The AA man said she was dry, filled her with oil, she started but the engine was still ticking and he said something about some lower noises meant there was engine damage and I'd need a rebuild....

Cvh engines easy to rebuild.

Google a reputable garage and ask them.

Cheap enough to buy another engine, but then you'll need someone to swap it over. PM me and I'll give you a few choice names of people who you can trust I come from Bethesda, but lived in Macclesfield since almost 2 years now, so can't really help out personally

Without seeing or hearing it its difficult to diagnose the fault.

Do you know anyone who's mechanically minded who's very local to you who can have a look.

Physically removing the engine and refitting on these cars is a piece off piss.
You should be able to source a good 2nd hand motor for less than a rebuild would cost. Might be worth you ungrudging to 2.0 spec whilst you're at it!!

Unless you are hell bent on keeping the original engine number (that's presuming it still is the original engine) then I'd be buying a good used engine
