Default Some questions about 2WD Cossie

Hi

I've two 2WD Sapph Cossies and both of them destroys alternators. Repair or change for a new one and still breaking. In one of them the complete wiring of the car is new so I think to change for other model

- Any alternative to the standard alternator? 4wd alternator is better? Maybe change the pulley to decrease the revolutions on it?

- I'm looking to change the diff in one of them from standard. I've some cases (7 and 7,5). Best option is Quaife ATB? Need any mod to fits on the std case with standard crown and pinion?

- I'm looking to the inlet manifold from MSD http://shop.motorsport-developments....4wd-1060-p.asp
- My Cossies are LHD, did you know if fits with the original abs and brake pump in the standard place?

I cannot help on the alternator front but the inlet manifold from msd does fit in a lhd car. We have a customer in holland with one in his lhd sierra sapphire cosworth.

I personally do not like the atb and prefer a plated diff, gripper from bars or speak with mike rainbird about a Titan unit which I have in my own car (although it's not on the road yet)

All these units go into the standard casings and I would advice 7.5" unit being 2wd

If both of them are "destroying" the alternators then you must be fitting them incorrectly or there is a load etc the two share in common.

It's a very good unit (90A) the alternators are the same bar the pulleys, it's only the 3DR that was different (70A).

quaife diffs are shit my mate has just busted his for the 5th time! i have a gripper which has been spot on other than doing the crown wheel and pinion but thats nothing to do with the diff unit! but you may as well go supra as my mate is doing as it works out almost the same

Thanks for the info about diffs

Is rare the alternators problem because one of the cossies have a new unit and new complete wiring loom and brokes again. I'll checked everything again looking for loads or any problem

When you say they 'destroy' alternators, what goes wrong on them? Is your alternator drop bracket hole ovalized so the pulley is running at a slight angle perhaps?

First of all, do you have aftermarket airconditioning to these cars?

My sierra had aftermarket one, and the bracket that holds the alternator had some small rubber bushes on it. When I tightened the alternator, it would sit slightly of and the belt was at an angle to the alternator.

The result was that the alternator's bearings would fail quite fast.

The solution I found is a different alternator mount, without bushes.

Last 3 times this is the part that brokes on the alternators (sorry, i don't know the name in english)

When you say it brakes does it come in pieces, or the carbon pick-ups on the part wear out? I roughly translate that part to "modulator" as I am from Greece, but have seen a broken one. The ones I have seen either the diodes on the alternator don't work properly and "burn" the round black thing, the bearings or the carbon parts fail due to age.

Still none of this is relevant if you have fitted a new alternator.

Exactly this: "the carbon pick-ups on the part wear out"

And happens in a completely new alternator and in a rebuild unit (checked internal parts and new "modulator" unit)

the alternators are destroyed by the heat from the turbo and engine harmonics
the 4x4 had a heat shield fitted to the back
the 909 alternator has metalastic bushes to insulate it from the engines harmonics
plenty of production cars have this type of alternator you can use
You can also use a heat shield off some audi models that have a ducting pipe
remember the alternator air intake is from the rear and is drawn through the front by the fan
very common problem you have with the std alternator on a 2wd your climate won't help

The part you mention is the regulator, as said heat is the enemy, especially if you have a larger turbo than standard as it will be in even greater proximity.

unpick the wiring harness and pull it over the strut top then use loom tape to reseal it all.

i got sick of the main harness having too much resistance and killing wiring and alternators, never had a problem after it was relocated.

i did after several years route it back to the origional position but wrap it inside of heatproof sleeving and make a stainless steel heatshield, again with no problems on alternator (same one from 2003-2008 and lots of track use)

Yeah, both cossies have bigger turbos.

I'll bought a protector for the back zone of the alternator to protect the regulator and reallocated the wiring
