Default DV question

If your car has a DV and you remove it, people always say this is bad for your turbo (with regards to turbo stall) personally i carnt stand them and never had a issue running with out and wondered what others thought, with regards to it being damaging.

running them will reduce strain when you lift off the throttle, exactly the measure of strain or more importantly danger of turbo failure is guess work, dependant on boost pipes, boost levels etc.

I only ran one when exceeding 30psi - weather the boost pressure depends on size of the turbo but i never ran one on my RS Turbo's

Depends on turbo, boost and engine management.

RS Turbos do not need them (and never had one from the factory), neither do Cossies. Small turbo Escort Cossie does but not because of turbo damage but beacause of Fords EEC-IV using a MAF that gets very upset by have already metered air passed back again with the closed throttle. Effectively metering the same air twice causing overfueling.

true, obviously not running a DV and letting the air pass back through the compressor would put torsion on the shaft but like you say as to how much is a bit of a guess.

its just something i see that pops up in discussions from standard boost levels upwards people say its bad for the turbo, as above the torsion seems to be what people are getting at but if people are running 30 psi like this a doubt 10psi is straining it much.

i guess with out lots of testing its a guess, i wouldnt have though snapped shafts would be that common would you think it could snap blades off?

Best thing to do is ask a reputable tuner they know what's best as I wad advised at +30psi on my old T38 it should run one

i have a turbosmart fitted to mine and have it set to only dump when over 18psi, pretty much my current max boost limit whilst still easing the clutch in.
