Whats peoples thoughts on this good or bad idea?
Granted most classic car owners take care of there cars but is this just a loop hole for people to shoe horn a quick engine in a old shell and never have to worry or just people driving around old bangers.

In the Isle of Man no MOT is required, they just sieze you car if its dangerous!
Any way I would have thought that most poeple who have a car that old have to have looked after it or the rust would have taken it years ago.
I think this is a sop to stop people asking for the NO Road tax age to be updated!
I think it was after 20 or 25 years no road tax! Then the "forgot" to start apdating the year. So No MOT after 52 years doesn't realy cut it!

helps me with my 54 pickup, that mean no tax or mot to worry about, just the Ł120 a year for the insurance, might have to fit LPG and the big v8 would be ok as an every day vehicle when i'm in the country, sweet
At the least, surely they shoul do one every other year. Wish they would bring back the rolling road tax system though. Even if it was for cars thirty plus years. Lots of the 80s stuff well on their way.
It is the owner responsibility to keep in safe! I do! OK I know a bit about cars, but if I'm not sure I get it looked at by someone! My family go in that car too, so moraly I think I have no choice but to keep it to the best standard I can! You wouln't take you child in a car that you thought had dodgy brakes would you?
Old car's don't have many of the safely features many new ones do so you you have to make sure that the ones that the do have work at least as well as designed!

As said above the likelyhood of it surviving longer than a lot of people do with no issues and staying on the road is unlikely, after all looking at the prices of classics now youd be mad not too keep it mint therefore not using it on the road often anyway.
Could be a few loopholes though, minis and landrovers spring to mind as the earliest minis were 1959 and landys earlier so you could theoretically have a rotten 1980's mini/landy,unscrew the vin (oh yes, that's how they were fitted),shove 1960 tags on and off you go.
Although what are the chances of obtaining pre 1960 tags?
Brain starts working.
Pre 1960 ford Cossie sounds fun!!!!

My dad restores old military vehicles and they don't need an mot, can be a pain in the arse to get tax for when you go to the DVLA building with just a reg document and insurance document and the person behind the counter is demanding the mot certificate , even had a manager of the place on the phone to his boss for ages trying to get an answer why we thought we didn't need an mot! But yeah if pulled over and it's not in a serviceable condition there are hefty fines to be had

I know a chap who thought it was a great idea to get his recovery wagon Mot exempt and quickly found he was getting pulled over all the time and thus sold it for an mot'ed version.
Reckons it wasn't worth the small savings each year plus when he tried selling the wagon non moted he had a lot of timewasters and dodgy fucks trying to get it for fuck all.
Swings and roundabouts I suppose.

The law and M.O.T. are two separate things, so something that passes on a M.O.T. doesnt make it legal e.g. tyres. A non passenger car can run 1mm of tread. 1.6MM of tread to the law is illegal. Then your car is unroadworthy.... on non passenger car is anything with more than 5 seats
