Default A What Car? max £3k diesel drift estate.

Hi everybody,, My mate is getting rid of his astra estate and wants something newer and rear wheel drive, preferably diesel and estate .... for up to the £3,000 mark -so he can go drifting and as he says, a 'pussy patrol' ..... lol

Anybody got any suggestions apart from the Beemer?

only thing we can find is an E46 estate, are they any good/reliable/driftable? ...

Thanks

Matt.

A diesel's power band is far from ideal for drifting

What are 330d's like on fuel? My mrs is up for a diesel now but she's got an impreza so doesn't want to go gutless. I showed her a 320d sport e46 and she actually liked it! The 330's seem pretty decent money now too but are they crap mpg?

that diesel esate seems like its tuned to fuck lool...

according to Bmw = BMW claims the 330d can hit 62 mph from rest in just 6.7 seconds and go onto a top speed that's artificially constrained by a 155 mph electronic speed limiter. In our experience, it feels even quicker. Even better, BMW claims that the 330d will return a combined fuel economy figure of 43.5 mpg.

so, 43.5mpg.. thats ok isnt it going by todays standards ?

Alright for combined I'd say. Not sure I'd want to take it drifting mind. Might be worth buying a warranty if you find one with low enough miles. Can look at mega bills. Oh. And be careful buying anything older than a 51 plate, they had problems with floor rot!

Is drifting not more about torque though than outright power?

If so, I should have thought a Diesel would be ideal?

To OP yes 3 series are good candidates for drifting, mainly due to there perfect weight distribution, I believe the 325 (E36) is used alot.

Don't forget the merc range as well,a nice e class 320cdi or even 270cdi,less engine issues than the BMW and more likely to be cheaper and lower miles although mechanically mercs are a tough nut,the only real probs with that cdi motor are the injector seats which aren't too bad to fix and apparently swirl flaps but that's usually sorted at low mileage and for 3k you'll be over 100000 miles so that should have been dealt with by then.
You'll know if the injector seats are gone as it'll sound like Ivor the engine or to our younger viewers a steam engine.
Mercs drift for fun and with a decent set of 5x112 alloys from either the merc range or vw/Audi and a drop can look nice very easily.
The only problem maybe that they mainly come in auto flavour but it is a tiptronic box and a tough one at that.

We drive our cars in a spirited manner, and average low 20's.
