I took my 4x4 XR4i out last night for the first time in a couple of months and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Not the quickest car by a long way but just felt really planted on the road and it made up in the bends anything that it lost on the straights.

Had a few 2.9's and love them...yea not blow your head off performance but great brakes, massive traction and easily an everyday car! Want another with 24v conversion!

i had a 2.9 daily driver, befor i got the cossie,
absolutly loved it, magnex, pair of k&ns, big cam, ported heads uprated fuel pressure,
just over 170bhp on ther rollers, it wasn't earth shattering by any standeds, but the torque was fantastic. plant you right foot at any speed in any gear and it would just take off.
yours being the 2.8 is a little harder to tune due to the simesed port heads and the MFi.
but there are still plenty of tuning options
in the damp when pushed very hard through corners and roundabouts it would understeer then start to drift when the the back wheels broke traction. but it was very predicable (spax adjsustable PSX sport suspention kit about a 40mm drop and goodyear NCT 205 50 15 tyres)
as said above the fuel consumptions was shocking, mine was as little as 10mpg sometimes.
i would proberly still have it now but it was rear ended back in 2001 and was written off.

Both the 2.8 and 2.9 respond well to turbocharging... A solid 300 brake on low ish boost would make for a amazing car!

Great cars. Had a 2.9 for 6 years. Standard when bought but had konis, rs kit, recaros and a 24v by the end. Probably my fav car I've owned.

i used to have one was good fun dicking the hot hatches from the lights as it loved 6k launches lol the back would just squat and the front would point to the sky and you were away! major downside was fuel economy when fuel was in the 90 odd p per litre range i could easily do a tenner in going to work and back which was less than ten miles!! obviously driving fast tho, my cossie is far better on fuel and much much faster too
the other downside is i find they are really unstable over 100mph you can feel the back end lifting up!!

very predictable cars in handling terms, you know when its on its edge... if you take it that far, nice cars overall, sound lovely and are getting rarer now. And they also lap fuel up too

Been running my MK1 2.8 XR4x4 as a daily driver for the last 10 years and the only major problem has been replacing the layshaft and rollers in the gearbox. Its running a fast road cam, exhaust, ported heads, 10:1 compression probably only making 160 - odd HP as the inlet manifolds are a restrictive piece of crap but plenty of torque and fast enough for a bit of fun. The brilliant handling more than makes up for the asthmatic engine! I have no plans to get rid of it any time soon even though sourcing parts down in this part of the world is a nightmare!!

had a few, both twinturbo, standard, and 24v. i'd advise NOT tuning them as you get little returns for pretty big investments. if you want more power stick in a 24v BOA from a granada as theyre dirt cheap, a simple swap and offer good gains over the standard one.

nice enough to drive around bust most modern stuff is nicer and torquier anyway.

certainly not a car that makes any sense as an everyday running as there is better stuff available for the same or less cash, but if you really wanted a sierra it's probably the most sensible everyday version.

probably quite expensive to insure too, i'm sure theyre in group 15+!
