Second thread of the day but ahh well...

Everyone seems to be amazed that I want a high mileage car.

My Uncle just bought a 2008 Citreon C5 VTR+ with 22k on it. It's had to have a new EGR, ABS Sensors and now he's having DPF problems.

I can't help but feel that if he'd gone for the 2009 with 100k he wouldn't have had the issues.

You can't put up with the car going into limp mode or errors comming up on the dash etc if you are doing 100 miles a day.

My Dad's Volvo which is about to go back is 4 years old with 105k on it and nothing mechanical has ever gone wrong. It still feels like new to drive too.

Does anyone else think that low mileage cars are false economy?

Totally agree with you mate! Makes me laugh when people ask "how many miles has it done" with regard to my 1972 Capri...Its probably had several different engine, suspension typres/brakes...etc

Often makes me wonder where the bloody hell do they go to to rack up the milage so quick. I recently saw a 2006 Skodia Octavia for sale with 222k on the clock!! How and why??

 

depends on how the cars been driven.

cars with low miles can be for many reasons.

If its been a town car then its quite possible for it to be daily driven, never warmed up properly, always start stop etc. And then youd expect problems as its had a harsh life.

However a low miles car could be something driven as a second car or not driven often and hence genuinely in good condition.

High mileage motorway munchers can be in good nick for the mileage as motorway driving is low load on most of the componants.

 

Miledge isn't so much of a problem with newer engines, providing they have been serviced regular.
Its not uncommon to find Vags and Bmw's with 250k+ and still run perfectly!
Obviously things like bushes and other things wear out but I would happily buy a car with 150k on the clock.

Its not like the old days when 100k was time for the scrappy.

You can buy some cracking motors at rock bottom prices if you don't mind 100k+ on the clock

Ive done 37k in my Berlingo in eleven months, and that is only too and from site..... no sales rep 'fifteen appointment a day' stuff..............

It was an executive taxi until I bought it a year ago for £700!
It drives like a dream! I was so impressed I went and bought another Volvo s60 with the same engine and box. She returns about 43mpg average as well.Awesome!


I wouldn't let mileage put me off ever again! Mind you.. There's a difference between a well serviced moon miler and a neglected one! My mate works for Volvo so he knew the car well and advised me to snap it up when it came in px

 

Buying a French car was his first major mistake

High milage is no problem, people worry too much. Bought my 530D with 141k on it, now got 165k in just over a year. These cars were built to live on the autobahn, with correct servicing they will go on forever.

Buy a high miler for less £ & enjoy depreciation free motoring, most "low" milage cars have been clocked anyway. Huge amount of cars suddenly lose 70k+ miles before the first MOT!

 

You'd never guess looking at the motor from the outside,
Very appealing to those who turn the miledge back and sell on as a low miledge car.

The digi dash makes them ever so easy to clock! you dont even need to remove the clocks like the old days.

i just recently bought a 2005 connect tddi with 150 thou full ford service history 1 owner
company vehicle sparky (freind of mine)
the van had a hole in the block engines are cheap i got one from a 2001 focus with 81 thou fitted my pump new belt ect its aspot on i got less than a grand in a 2005 connect.
I would sooner have a car/ van with good body engine can changed in a day for penuts
beware of ones with lots of owners they usualy have been sold on with problems

 

I'm the opposite, high mileage does bother me

 

The old lady (gotta be 80) that owns the shop around the corner was selling her car had 18k on the clock and it was an 06 corsa seems like its worth a look until I mention I saw her screaming up the road, must have been doing 30mph in 1st gear you could smell the clutch as you walked down the road. must have thought it was an auto.

 

Works nightshift vans x2 is 09 plates both with 270k on the clock ... they go from Edinburgh to Birmingham and back overnight (im just home at 7.30 this morning lol) we will have these special 'modified' vans for 10 years

 

Taxi mate. Skoda's are fairly much all the taxi boys today run unless they have a purpose built taxi such as the Peugeot Eurobus et al.

Or of course the proper black London cabs

mileage doesnt bother me at all,
aslong drives ok thats all that matters
We had a volvo s40 and we put loads miles on it and was still going when we sold it, That is one thing me and my partner do regret but i couldnt get insured on it but hey ho thing like that happens

my partner always said onn certain cars that if not reached 100k they not run in properly but that could just be him

 

All comes down to how its been looked after, service history etc.

High milers, things in general wear out no matter how well its been serviced.

A low mileage car might have been ragged from cold on lots of short journeys.

 

Trouble is you're looking at high mileage PUG's and Mondeos

Now you may get lucky with the mondy if you're carefull and get one with exemplary history, but the Pug......no fucking way would I look at a high miler, the only thing amazing would be the fact it got to high miles

my 08 focus tdci 1.6 estate is on 173000 with a full service history would love to buy it from the lease comapny now i'm getting made redundant but they want 3.6k for it with a 36 month warranty which would be virtually all of my pay off. did a 1000 miles a week in it on average never really missed a beat and still running original clutrch and exhaust on it as well

 

Two friends of mine both bought a 307 hdi, both almost gave them away after being plagued, and I mean plagued with faults.

One had an issue with the anti pollutant filter ( google it for a whole world of Hurt!) & limp mode. 6 months later with over 3 k spunked at main dealers, specialists, independent garages, he finally gave up as no one could fix it.

The second one had all of the above , and electrical problems that were unfathomable, it actually reduced a grown man to tears, due to the stupendous cost of repairs & parts, the anti pollutant fluid is somthing outrageous like £75 a litre ... He ended up selling it for £800 just to get shot of it, I believe he didn't see any change from 10k for just over two years of ownership.

Utterly shocking cars.

 

I must have struck lucky with my Mondeo then. I bought it with 98,000 miles on it at 3 years old from a mate who picked it up at auction. 11 years later it's now on 151,000 and still going strong with nothing ever going wrong apart from wear and tear components that have had to be changed.
High mileage wouldn't put me off again in the future.

my 06 octavia had 100k when it was a year old, when it was 19 mtsh old it wwas sold to a guy who worked with me and it has 178k

he gave 3.5k!!!!

i did nearly all those miles and that was 5 years ago

our iveco vans did 80 k a year

 

i couldnt give a shite what miles is on the car aslong as it runs ok

 

my 1st octavia vrs had just over 200k on it and ran really well, had far more pull than my 2nd one which had 110k on it...

My vectra has just clocked onto 100k, tbh the more i look at cars the more mileage i seem to see!
