Saw that in the Metro this morning - problem being is it's unregistered and with no cat on it, you won't be able to. Not that you'd want to drive it as such, but you'd at least like the opportunuty to !

isn't it to do with the date of manufacture not the date of first registration

I am now getting flashbacks to being driven up the M1 by my dad to family in my childhood in a MK 5 cortina after reading that! WOW that is truly unique!

I wouldn't argue the point either way Tony and I wouldn't bet my house on it either....as far as I was aware cars registered after 1991 (?) needed a cat. If they hadn't been registered by the time the new rules came in then I didn't think they could - but I'm happy to be corrected !

Nah,they were fitting rovers up to 1996 without cats, your Mot man just does a pre-cat test,no biggie.
Suzuki never even produced emissions data up to 2001.
Not sure how you'd go about registering it as a 2012 car but it could be registered 2012,year of manufacture 1981 sort of thing.

The old man had one identical to that,2.0gl in that off red colour but it wasnt in very good order although he kept it for years.
My mother never got to grips with the autochoke and pretty much flooded it every morning she tried to drive it,three different types of smoke out the back, fuel, engine wear and general exhaust gases.
It was generally reliable though but a pretty embarrassing car to be carted about in back in about 1989,rusty too even at about 4 years old it was welded up every Mot!!!
Nostalgic but would make a hateful daily!!

Late 90's, Isuzu were knocking out Troopers for peanuts because they had to be registered prior to a certain date that was fast approaching.
Reason was emissions, if not registered by a certain date they couldn't be registered at all.
My boss bought one.

Yes you can. A car is like the queen, has two birthdays.

It would be build date 1981, registration date 2012. Its emissions would be classed as if its a 1981 car as would its MOT Not sure how you'd fair on VED though.......

Proper time warp though.....

Easily registered, whoever he spoke to was a tit, all it will say on reg documents is "registered 2012 declared year of manufacture 1981", and it will go on the year on manufacture plate. ....my saph is exactly the same, it says 1998 on the V5, declared manufactured 1993
Also brings up the question, if you read the article, he bought every model brand new, I wonder what else there was hiding in that collection and if it will ever be sold on.

How come it's done so many miles if that's just delivery mileage? Do new cars have around that many miles on them as delivery miles?

I'd be a bit miffed if my brand new car had done nearly 100 miles

I remember this car from when I worked at TC Harrison Ford in sheffield in 1995, it was kept in a unused garage at the bottom of the yard, I'm sure it was covered in wax and a few years worth of dust, always wondered what happened to after the dealiership closed

Yes, thats completely wrong lol, that is 100HP and would sprint to 60 quicker as well.

The potential buyer will be someone who will just use it for shows.

how do you not get to grips with something that is automatic? you can't flood an engine with an autochoke unless it's faulty, that's the point of it being auto. as the coolant warms up, it releases the choke. you sir, are talking shit

You do have to set the autochoke on the pedal - press the accelerator to the floor and release slowly.

Most of the auto-chokes were useless anyway and were worse than if they were left manual, hence why most converted back to them.

i know exactly how an auto choke works, and that they have to be set. i've probably had more old fords with auto chokes than you've had hot dinners sunshine.

and what happens if you don't set it? is that going to flood it?
