Default S1 gearbox won't stay in 3rd, setting up linkage or gearbox??

Ok I have a S2 and gearbox was cream crackered so had a S1 box (that I got off a mates mate, which supposedly has been reconditioned) fitted to it today, still using the mk4 linkage and car wouldn't stay in 1st or 3rd gear. So took it back to garage and they adjusted linkage and it's a lot better - stays in 1st but sometimes comes out of 3rd when I come off the throttle. The box doesn't make any funny noises ...

Is the box knackered or Does the linkage need a little more fine adjusting?
How should I go about adjusting the linkage? Should I follow http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/cabrst/page35.jpg

If the linkage was out far enough to pull it out of gear your stick would look like it was in neutral when it was in 3rd! lol
But if you want to set it again then just make sure the box is in neutral, undo the selector rod clamp, get someone else to position the stick so it's in the neutral position and hold it there, do the clamp up, easy!

When I select 1st or 3rd the gear lever comes back an inch or so (really close to neutral) but still in gear and if car jerks or I come on and off throttle in 3rd it comes out of gear.

Im gona play with the linkage tmrw ...

at a guess you have the wrong linkage for that box early and late boxes have different linkages one has the gate in the box and one has the gate in the linkage

Yh Using a late mk4 linkage with s1 box so have no gate but Doesn't the gate just prevent you changing from 5th to reverse? And wouldn't affect selecting of gears?

I was going to suggest that.

If its popping out when you let off then it must be mount related. have a look to see if they have actually fixed it to the cradle

Been drivin today and got an update:

When selecting 1st if i move the gear lever from neutral, left, up and then right the gear lever doesnt move back an inch and i have no prob of 1st coming out of gear.

The same happens with 3rd: if i move gear lever from neutral, up and then right gear lever stays dere and i have no probs wid 3rd coming out when drivin.

Im guessing linkage needs to be set up properly?
