Not declaring engine swaps with ins company
Theres a guy over the road with a golf cabby with a vr6 engine that he fitted, we were chatting and I asked was the insurance much more when you changed it over, he said its still down as a 1.8, so that means he's not insuranced then doesn't it?
It certainly does!
But I doubt the insurance company would check anything unless he had a huge accident.
When I was hit in the ST no one checked anything. All declared but still, made me wonder why I tell them but not really worth it.

Things do get checked if the car is insured to have modified parts, I work at a body shop and had a golf in the other week where it had the sump hit off by a raised drain when the Roads where being redone and the car was on coilovers and where not on the policy,so the insurance company didn't pay out for any damage

When the car was estamated for its damage the coilovers where noticed and noted on the estamate and the insurance company decided not to make payout because if the car was at its normal height the damage wouldn't of happened, its all down to how anal the insurance companies are, I've seen cars with bold tyres that have hit things be repaired and seen a Saxo that was stolen recoverd not have a payout because the owner put vtr badges on it

I think this is pretty commonplace. You see no end of cars listed on ebay where the engine has been changed, and it says "Still registered as 1.1/1.3/1.4 - cheap insurance"
The thing is though the garages don't have to say about the bits on the car but some bits are hard to hide in photos and if the insurance see bits in photos that are not on the policy its up to them what they pay out for,the garages don't know what is and what isn't on the policy so just take photos of damage, that's why some people only list parts on the policy that can be seen like shocks and exhausts and filters but cams and engine work will never be noticed so people don't bother declaring them

Wonder how many shit cars don't get paid out due to "turbo" badges
Depends on if its been stolen,I think the saxo with the vtr badges on they might have thought that the car was stolen because it was thought it was a vtr and if it has the original badges on it wouldn't have been stolen,

Have to say in all my time running the garage not once did one assessor even bother to check the tyres etc but as stated above they all take photos of the damage and send them off so who knows.
One boy turned up down my place with a letter from his insurance company stating they believed he'd made a fraudulent claim AFTER he'd been paid out and they were taking him to court to recover it,all on the hearsay of others with little or no real evidence.
He asked me what I was going to do about it as I'd put him onto an accident management company,I quickly replied "fuck all",what the fuck did it have to do with me!!!!

To be fair if you havn't declared your mods why would the insurance company pay out.
I'd be a proper cunt if i was an assessor. Anything not declared would be a void policy.
Obviously badges and "Racing" seat covers etc is stupidly pathetic.
I renewed th insurance on my Mk6 Escort RS2000 the other day, told them i had now fitted coilovers, grooved and drilled brakes and different wheels and it didnt go up by anything.
Also insured the Mk2 Escort and told them instead of a 1.6 crossflow, it now has a 2.0 pinto fitted and although the insurance went up a little, it was not worth worrying about.

I heard a story of a young lad that got pulled by the old bill for speeding they run the number plate on their system came back as 1.2 corsa, copper realising that a 1.2 corsa wouldn't ever be that fast asked driver to open bonnet to reveal a 2.0l red top. Car insured as 1.2 car was seized by police and destroyed as he technically had no insurance. Now i'm not sure if this is an urban tale or not.
TBH id rather the insurance companies were cunts towards blatently undeclared mods as not paying out keeps it cheaper for the rest of us.
Also if youre the kind of driver who doesnt declare an engine swap, then chances are youre not so shy about taking other risks and id rather not be associated with you.
Its bad enough that we get lumped together in the same group as CHAV/boy racers as it is.
All of us will benefit from being distanced from the young boy racer lot.
As it is, being lumped together has negative impact on us in terms of police reaction, public opinion, insurance etc etc.

Its funny that people are blatantly doing it, and even admitting so in their adverts.

310bhp and still registered as a 1.4!!!

300bhp and still registered as a 1.4!
Could you imagine a 17/18/19 year old in one of these? Cos they could easily insure them being 1.2/1.4 on the logbook!

Can't you just play dumb and say that the engine was already in the car when you bought it and as far as you was aware that it was the engine stated on the log book. If you was to buy a xr2i zetec with a 2 ltr zetec fitted how would you know unless being told if you knew nothing about cars

Ignorance isn't really the best form of defense.
Yes, of course it does, as with any modification you do without declaring it, that is why I never get the point of engine swaps, as most insurance companies will charge you a fortune as the car is classed as custom/modified, for the money you pay you mights as well just buy a more powerful/better car outright IMO!
Re playing dumb, in the real world I really can't see that would work, it's a similar principle if you sell a car and don't transfer the name on the log book, any offences committed by the new owner will come to you, or if your driving around on a bald tyre, the fact that this happens by people who don't know better, but they would still get done if pulled by the cops!
Badges does seem a bit extreme though, but there again I wouldn't be so sad to do such a thing!

I got offered a 24v sapphire last week, the owner just got caught doing 140 apparently, they were also told "it's pretty fast for a 1.8" so now they're also getting done for no insurance. When you're young a dumb +10 years ago you'd get away with it, but they are alot stricter now on this type of thing, that and the fact you realise a few hundred quid on your insurance is feck all compared to the grief you'll get if you don't pay it.
There are 1000s of cars running round with the wrong engines.
I cant think of a few really dodgy ones, 1.3 on the log, YB in the bay.
for me I wouldnt take the risk as the potential 6points for no insurance would put my job at risk

a mate of mine had a crash in his car where the car was a total writeoff , the pay out was for 4 grand but because his mods wernt declaired they took 100 quid off for every modification so he ended up with 2800 quid , alloys , suspension , tinted windows , exhaust , induction kit ,bucket seats , m3 mirrors etc even drilled and groved discs!!
