Default Focus LX 1.8 Idle Problem

Afternoon all, im having a problem with a focus i have just taken in px and wondered wether somebody could point me in the right direction please.

When coming to a stop at traffic lights the revs will stick at around 2000rpm for around ten seconds. They will then either drop back down to around 850rpm or increase more until i set off again. It is becoming more frequent now and pretty much everytime i press the clutch down when coming to a stop the revs will do this.

It was annoying to start with, but bringing the clutch up to bite with the handbrake on obviously pulled the revs back down and shut her up abit! But now im finding myself paying more attention to what the car is doing and not whats happening infront of me, obviously not very safe!

I have cleaned the ICV out with brake cleaner and then gave it a good going over with some wd40, this didnt seem to have any effect. So has anybody got any suggestions? The car is a 1.8 petrol zetec engine and completly standard.

Many thanks and i apologise for my first post been a plee for help!

If the idle valve itself is not faulty, it is being told to open, thus raising engine speed.

The PCV hoses split as well, but then you would have a bad idle all together.

Thanks for your reply martin, so trying another ICV should be my next step?

What does PCV stand for? (its been a long day!) and where is this located? Inlet area?

Thanks again

PCV= Pollution Control Valve

It could be the valve, usually them gum up which causes them to stick, but cleaning them like you have usually resolves them, I guess you could try cleaning again? What I meant is something may be telling it to act like it is, i.e. bogus sensor input.
