Default Zetec 1.25 won't start after swap

Hi guys , My daughter seized the engine on her T reg Fiesta Zetec 1.25 through lack of oil.Her previous Fiesta had already been re-engined when I was using it and is presently SORN'D in her driveway. It was started up regularly and ran with no problem. I'm getting too old for all this palaver so I got a mobile mechanic to pull out both engines and refit the good one.Now it won't start, it turns over ok and fires a couple of times then it's as if there's a misfire that almost stops it.The mechanic has double checked all the electrical connections,it's getting petrol and a spark but it's for all the world like the timing's too far advanced or even a couple of plug leads are swapped over.In other words it's firing but at the wrong time. Any ideas what could be causing it given that this engine was running the day before?

Are the plug leads on the coil pack properly. The coil pack should have the numbers for each plug.

You could always try swapping the coil packs over.Check the timing marks too just for piece of mind.

check the plugs again, easy to get 2 confused

does it constantly spark? i beleve there are 2 that can be swapped over by accident, is there fuel getting to the fuel rail (press fitting you can slip off the pipe and prime thru the ignition to see if fuel comes out.... into a jar)

are all the connections at the battery connected?

ive swapped loads of these engines, they usually puff up straight away

Sorry cabriolet, I've just joined this forum and wasn't sure if I'd posted in the right place to begin with. Thanks for your reply in the other section.

Glenn. yes the leads haven't been disturbed at all and the mechanic tried swapping the coil packs and the injector rack but to no avail. Erm, I'm not sure there are any timing marks on this engine,it's locked up with special tools before the belt is changed.

1.9 xr2 on 40's The mechanic was back today and used a spark tester on each plug.He reckoned one was pulsing regularly and the rest were erratic.Fuel is there at the rack and all electrical connections have been double checked.

cabriolet said "these have throttle bodies that sometimes are not recognised by the ecu when u swap them about fit her original [to her car not the donor] throttle body yes i know its a arse to change in between the manifold but think this might be yr problem" on the Q&A section. Well we were back at it today and one thing I noticed was that the donor car had a MAF sensor on the air cleaner and a blanking plate just aft of the throttle body whereas the knackered engine has a MAP sensor at that position and the car it came out of has no MAF sensor.I'm going to swap inlet manifolds complete with throttle bodies and the little bit of harness and see if that makes a difference.
Thanks for your patience and tips guys!

Try swapping the engine ecu imobilizer ring.round the barrel and ignition barrel.

If both cars have remote central locking swap the key fobs/remotes into the key that fits the barrel with the engine that has just been fitted. The chip for the ecu/imobilizer is in the keyfob/remote. Surely the airflow meter must have something to do with it????

It is a bit of a hard one this is.Im sure there is a compant called Shawspeed that specialises in the mk4/5 fiesta.

Yep, put it all back to how it was originally and you should be getting somewhere.

Cheers Glenn. No remotes on these cars, a P reg and a T reg. The T does have electric locking on both front doors but it's manual.I'm hoping that the manifold swap will turn up trumps but I'm not sure how airflow can disrupt the spark pattern at startup.
Thanks gary GVK.

Thumbs up

When I was standing around scratching my head wondering what to do next, I glanced at the banjaxed engine and thought about swapping the sensors off it. I looked at them all and noticed that there was an extra thing on it that the replacement engine didn't have, namely a Manifold Air Pressure(MAP) sensor on the actual manifold moulding just behind the throttle body. The donor car had a Mass Air Flow(MAF) sensor on the air intake and the recipient car didn't.When I looked at the replacement engine there was only a blank plate on the manifold where the MAP sensor should be.It didn't want to come off so I just swapped the whole manifolds complete with throttle bodies and used the original bit of harness with the extra plug on it.I'd been genning up on sensors and I read that the Crankshaft Position sensor was the one that triggered the spark so I pulled them both out to test them. The one in the replacement engine had like swarf or iron filings stuck to it because of the magnet.I checked them both with the multimeter and got identical readings.Waving a spanner in front of them got similar deflections on the meter.I swapped them round anyway thinking it won't do any harm and lo and behold it fired up immediately. So I don't know what did the trick - the MAP or the CP but I'm delighted it's going now!
Thanks again guys for taking the time to reply
