99 focus Zetec s engine question
Hi there, I've just bought a focus with a knocking big end. Took the sump off and its full of metal.... The big end bearings were wafer thin and deformed which has killed the crank journals etc.
My question is are all engines from 98-04 so zetec s silvertops and se blacktops interchangeable? I'm just going to stick another 1.6 lump in.
I've heard early mk5 fiestas are the same (just use the origional mounts) there just seem to be more blacktop 1.6 se engines about. I'm desperate for an engine as its my transport.....
Cheers

The early engines had a metal cam cover enscribed "Zetec-S", the later ones were plastic and had "Zetec-SE" printed on them, these are known as phase 1 and 2 engines respectively.
The engines are the same, phase 2 engines had slight enhancements in the head but it's still the same engine none the less.
The Fiesta Zetec-S model, again used the same engine borrowed from the Focus.
These are "Throw away" engines, i.e. due to the design of the engine block with a ladder style crankshaft iirc you cannot rebuild them.
