Default HELP engine won't rev above 3000rpm

Hi I just bought a donor car for my mk4 escort combi, it's a mk1 mondeo 2.0 Zetec (silver top) n it won't rev over 3k some1 said it could be the mass airflow meter and that if I unplugged it and it revd all the way with it unplugged then it's that what's gone so I unplugged it but it still didn't rev over 3k. So if any1 could help it would be much appreciated. cheers stu
